2 Course focuses on Basic Radiation Safety Required for all individuals working with radioactive materials Environmental Health and Safety mission:  Provide a safe and healthy environment for all  Minimize injury to faculty, staff, students, and visitors  Prevent damage to university property Overview

3 EH&S is divided into six departments:  1) Facility and Fire Safety  Pest Control and Fire Equipment Service Units  2) Radiation Control and Radiological Services  University-wide radiation protection  3) Occupational and Research Safety  Monitors biological and chemical research activities, clinic safety, and accident prevention programs EH&S as a whole

4 EH&S  4) Diving Science and Safety  Supports scientific diving for the University of Florida  5) Hazardous Materials Management  Coordinates the disposal of radioactive/chemical waste at on- and off-campus locations  6) Industrial Hygiene  Responsible for asbestos removal, indoor air quality and other industrial hygiene problems

11 Don Munroe  Supervises all aspects of radiation measurement and protection activities  Personnel monitoring  Maintenance of exposure records  Survey methods  Waste disposal  Radiation safety practices  Consult new authorized users  Serves as ex officio member of all radiation safety committees at the departmental, college, experiment station, and university levels Radiation Safety Officer

12 Responsibilities Include:  Enforce safety rules and regulations as set forth by this manual  Train employees on the safe handling of radioactive materials  Inform Radiation Control of personnel changes  Maintain inventory records and perform weekly contamination surveys  Ensure safe and secure storage of radioactive materials and sources in the laboratory Principal Investigator (PI)

13 Procurement and Receipt of Radioactive Materials: May obtain radioactive materials after their proposal has been approved by submitting an order to Rad. Control All radioactive materials must be received, processed, and inspected by the Radiation Control Department prior to delivery to the lab The key to a good radiation safety program is demonstrating your control!
