To Identify: - What causes confrontation How to deal with confrontation

In groups take a few minutes to discuss what causes confrontation with players in a game? Win or lose – Passion for the game Frustration of being outplayed Close or equal scores Flash points e.g. when an important goal is scored The Referee

We have established that flash points are a cause of confrontation. In groups discuss what flash points are and when they can occur within a game? Penalties Cautions Sending off incidents After an important goal is scored Mass Confrontation

Research by the University of Cardiff revealed that confrontation is most likely to occur: - In the first ten minutes In the last ten minutes Ten minutes either side of half time Following a flash point incident

In groups discuss how the Referee can be a cause of confrontation? Over Tolerant Excessive use of advantage No communication with players Lack of confidence and empathy for the game Poor concentration and alertness

Apply the fifteen minute trial Apply the ten minute refereeing technique Identify and punish offences Limit the use of Advantage Remain mentally alert – look and listen Adjust to changing level in the game

THE FIFTEEN MINUTE TRIAL The fifteen minute trial is best applied at the beginning of the game because, players enter a game with three things on their minds as follows: - Weigh up the opposition Decide what to do about them Test the Referee e.g. is he lenient or strict (what are his standards The Referee should set his stall out within the first fifteen minutes of the game to demonstrate his standards to the players. The Referee is the owner of the stall not the players and he decides the final price. Bargaining can perhaps come later depending upon the tempo and temperature of the game in question.

TEN MINUTE REFEREEING What is the ten minute refereeing technique? It is a method of regaining control or asserting authority on a game following incidents or confrontation. How is this achieved? Please discuss in your groups Adjust the way the game is controlled Vary the level of involvement e.g. authoritive Be authoritive after flash points to regain control Allow no advantage Discipline players in accordance with the LOTG Deal swiftly with dissent Identify and be near incidents and confrontation areas
