Module 1 Unit 1 Learning Targets/Do Nows/Notes/ Questions

Daily Learning Targets 9/4/13 1.I can make inferences to deepen my understanding of Inside Out & Back Again. 2.I can cite evidence from the novel to explain how incidents reveal aspects of Ha’s character. 3.I can use context clues to figure out word meanings. 4.I can participate in discussions about the text with a partner, small group, and the whole class.

Based on the Gallery Walk and the Mix and Mingle, what do you think might have to happen to a little girl to make her say that she would prefer war at home in Saigon (Vietnam) to peace in Alabama (the United States)?

What do you notice about how this novel is written? How is it like other novels you have read? How is it different?

9/5/13 Do Now – In spiral notebook: Write today’s date Define the following terms (take a guess, do your best):  gist = initial (first) sense of what the text is mostly about  free verse poetry = poetry with no rhyme or rhythm patterns  stanza = a group of lines that form smaller chunks in a poem  prose = text structured in sentences or paragraphs Take out HW (student inventory/survey) to hand in (check for name on it)

Daily Learning Target 9/5 1.I can make inferences to deepen my understanding of Inside Out & Back Again. 2.I can cite evidence from the novel to explain how incidents reveal aspects of Ha’s character. 3.I can use context clues to figure out word meanings. 4.I can participate in discussions about the text with a partner, small group, and the whole class.

Analyze this Quote: “No one would believe me, but at times I would prefer wartime in Saigon to peacetime in Alabama.” (p. 195) Based on the last two days, what do you think might have to happen to a little girl to make her say that she would prefer war at home in Saigon (Vietnam) to peace in Alabama (the United States)?

Text Dependent Questions 1.Tet is a special day. When is Tet, and what two events are celebrated on Tet? 2.How does the family celebrate Tet? 3.So, how does this special day affect the other days? 4.What does the narrator do that might bring bad luck? 5.What can you infer about the narrator based on this action?

9/9/13 Daily Learning Targets 1.I can make inferences to deepen my understanding of Inside Out & Back Again. 2.I can cite evidence from the novel to explain how incidents reveal aspects of Ha’s character. 3.I can use context clues to figure out word meanings. 4.I can participate in discussions about the text with a partner, small group, and the whole class.

M1 U1 L3 – Text Dependent Questions 1.(two parts to this question – did you answer both?) The poem title is the beginning of the novel title: “Inside Out” These first two poems refer to predicting good or bad luck for the rest of the year; The use of words “predicts” (second poem, stanza 1) and “foretells” (first poem, stanza 3) connect the two poems.

2. On page 4 in stanza 1, the fortune teller “predicts that our lives with twist inside out.” We don’t really know what this means but it doesn’t sound positive. “Fate” synonym with “destiny” – both are out of a person’s control. M1 U1 L3 – Text Dependent Questions

3. In the second stanza of the poem, Ha hopes that “soldiers will no longer patrol our neighborhood,” to “jump rope after dark,” and that the “whistles …will stop screeching.” Basically she doesn’t want to have to hide from danger. M1 U1 L3 – Text Dependent Questions

4. In the last stanza, Ha states, “the war is coming closer to home.” This is probably what will make her life different, or “inside out.” M1 U1 L3 – Text Dependent Questions
