Do Now 9/16/14 Please take out your spiral notebook Write today’s date and title Module 1 “Academic Vocabulary”

Learning Targets 1.Determine the central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including its relationship to supporting ideas. 2.By the end of the year, read and comprehend literary nonfiction at the high end of the grades 6-8 text complexity band independently and proficiently.

Agenda 1.Do Now 2.Vocabulary Notes 3.Review Test questions 4.Test reflection paragraph

Academic Vocabulary objective - just the facts; no bias, no opinion perspective - point of view; how someone sees something subjective – when events are described through a perspective, or point of view. Ha is telling us her experience, not “just the facts” tone - the specific attitude of a text that the author wants to say about the subject

Academic Vocabulary central idea – important idea; big picture idea; more often in informational text. plot – events that make up a story; typically used when describing a piece of fiction

Great Answers… 1.What I can infer about Ha based on “Wishes I keep to myself” is that she is considerate. I can infer this because if Ha were to say her one wish “I wish Father would appear in our doorway and make Mother’s lips curl upward,” (p.31, stanza 2) it would make her mother very sad because she misses him so much. Ha does not want that to happen.

2a. I think chiding means, in the context, scolding or nagging. 2b. The evidence that helped me figure my definition out is “which makes it worse.” This shows Ha is bothered by her Mother’s cautions and believes it only makes the situation worse.

3. Two reasons Ha makes for this wish are to make herself happy and her mom happy. I know this because when she wishes this she visualizes the happiest moment when her dad would “extend his hand toward me.” (p. 31, stanza 8) She also wishes this for her mom because her mom is very upset that her husband is gone and all Ha wishes is for him to come back and to “make Mother’s lips curl upward.” (p. 31, stanza 9)

Reflection Expectations 1 paragraph 1 positive reflection 2 reflection points about needing improvement Be specific and clear about your own work Cite question #s Concluding statement about what you will work on for the future
