Writing Equations for Reactions in Solution Nia Gilliam 5/6 periods Chem. II, 3 rd tutorial

Types of Equations for Reactions in Aqueous Solutions 3 types: Molecular-shows overall reaction but not all forms of reactants and products in solution Complete ionic-represents all reactants and products that are strong electrolytes as ions. Net ionic-includes only the components that undergo a change, not spectator ions.

Aqueous sodium chloride is added to aqueous silver nitrate yields to make solid silver chloride and aqueous sodium nitrate. Complete ionic equation: Na + (aq)+Cl - (aq)+Ag + (aq)+ NO 3 - (aq)  AgCl(s)+Na + (aq)+NO 3 - (aq)

Aqueous sodium chloride is added to aqueous silver nitrate yields to make solid silver chloride and aqueous sodium nitrate. Molecular equation: NaCl(aq)+AgNO 3 (aq)  AgCl(s)+NaNO 3 (aq)

Aqueous sodium chloride is added to aqueous silver nitrate yields to make solid silver chloride and aqueous sodium nitrate. Net ionic equation: CL - (aq)+Ag + (aq)  AgCl(s)

Aqueous potassium hydroxide is mixed with aqueous iron(III) nitrate yields to make solid iron(III) hydroxide plus aqueous potassium nitrate. Molecular equation: 3KOH(aq)+Fe(NO 3 ) 3 (aq)  Fe(OH) 3 (s)+3K + (aq)+3NO 3 - (aq)

Aqueous potassium hydroxide is mixed with aqueous iron(III) nitrate yields to make solid iron(III) hydroxide plus aqueous potassium nitrate. Complete ionic equation: 3K + (aq)+3OH-(aq)+Fe 3+ (aq)+ 3NO 3 -(aq)  Fe(OH) 3 (s)+3K + (aq)+ 3NO 3 -(aq)

Aqueous potassium hydroxide is mixed with aqueous iron(III) nitrate yields to make solid iron(III) hydroxide plus aqueous potassium nitrate. Net ionic equation: 3OH-(aq)+ Fe 3+ (aq)  Fe(OH) 3 (s)
