5 TANK MAN Tank Man, or the Unknown Rebel, is the nickname of an anonymous man who stood in front of a column of Chinese tanks the morning after the Chinese military forcibly removed protestors from in and around Beijing’s Tiananmen Square on June 5, Several hundred civilians had been shot dead by the Chinese army during a bloody military operation to crush a democratic protest (most of which were peaceful) in Peking's (Beijing) Tiananmen Square the previous day.

6 What was unusual about the way he did it?
What was he doing? This man was a PACIFIST – what do you think this means?

7 PACIFISM The belief that war and violence are unjustifiable under any circumstances, and that all disputes should be settled by peaceful means. The refusal to participate in war or military service because of such a belief.

8 How can PACIFISTS achieve peace in a non-violent way?
A lot of religious people class themselves as pacifists. There are a number of religious organisations who oppose war and try to achieve world peace in a non-violent way. How can PACIFISTS achieve peace in a non-violent way? Snowballing – pupils start their own MINDMAP – writing down 2 ideas – they then screw it up and throw it to someone – they then add another idea – then they throw it on to someone else who adds another idea – this is done 4 times in total so hopefully 6 different ideas are on each piece of paper – pupils are to then glue in any piece of paper into their books for revision.

9 Did you get any of the following?
Education - educating both sides to help them settle differences Teaching forgiveness - through religious teachings Encouraging pacifism - getting others to follow their lead Speeches - speaking out against injustice Campaigning (marches, protests, sit ins, petitions etc) - against injustice and app restive governments Keeping people informed - showing people around the world of injustice in certain areas Reconciliation - Getting both sides to talk to each other and encouraging a truce. They can add these to their ideas
