Why I Want To Teach! By Misti Neely

S TANDARD #10: LEADERSHIP AND COLLABORATION The teacher seeks appropriate leadership roles and opportunities to take responsibility for student learning, to collaborate with learners, families, colleagues, other school professionals, and community members to ensure learner growth, and to advance the profession. By understanding who, what, when, where, why, and how I want to teach, I am building a plan that shows me what students, colleagues and community members I will be directly working with. Also by evaluating what my contributions will be to the profession, I am ensuring growth and advancement within the teaching profession. Through understanding what kind of teacher I am, I’m stepping into a leadership role and taking responsibility for what type of learners my students will be. (Baldaia, 2013)

I want to teach so I can pass on the legacies of my teachers, by touching the hearts of my students, as my teachers did for me! First introduced me to teaching, by allowing me to teach her English Class for a full day! I instantly fell in love with teaching. Her teaching philosophy is: students are more willing to learn while having fun. She is the inspiration for my teaching method and philosophy. She acted crazy and goofy, which drew our attention onto her. I plan to use the same method of teaching, by making learning fun in my classroom. He was a paraplegic and a very quiet man. I never knew how to take him. I always did well in his class but I never knew if he truly liked me as a person or not. For some reason I was actually kind of scared of him. One day I was heading to my locker after basketball practice and across the hall I saw him sitting in his classroom. I decided to swallow my fear and go in and talk to him. I asked if he would like me to grade any papers for him and he handed me a stack. As I sat there grading papers he asked me questions about my future. I knew I wouldn’t be able to afford college, so I told him I didn’t know what I was going to do with my life. That’s when he said these words that will forever be in my head. “You are a shining star, you give off a radiance and enthusiasm that teachers notice. You will go far in life and you will change lives. I KNOW you will.”(Buckland, 2004) Those words have rang through my head ever since that day. How could he KNOW that I was going to do great things? I never got the chance to tell him that he changed my life that day. A few days after our conversation Mr. Buckland died. I never got the chance to tell him that he was right, I won’t let anything stand in my way. I will earn a degree in Education and change the lives of my students through teaching. 5 EFFECTIVE TEACHER TRAITS I POSSESS! A Life Long Learner! A Life Long Learner! (Mcleod, Super Teacher)

Educational Philosophy I want to be the teacher that students talk about years after they are out of my class. The teacher that makes learning fun and exciting! The teacher that inspires her students to think BIG and dream BIGGER! I want to be a teacher that loves her job and students! Who respects the beliefs of other’s and herself! By combining the philosophies of my teacher’s I’ve created my own. To teach with love of the profession, community and students. To create a safe and fun learning environment for my students. To walk in the door each day with enthusiasm. There is no greater joy than teaching! Most of all, to assure each of my students that they are important and have the ability to achieve the impossible!

Student Characteristics – What are the characteristics of the students I want to teach? I want to teach Elementary students of all shapes, colors and sizes who are eager to learn and have fun! I want to share my passion for learning with all children! Give me an enthusiastic and creative student and I will give you a future teacher!
