2. DSRG, WPI 2 Project 1: Hidden Web Problem Consider a site such as amazon.com. Data is hidden behind a form interface. How to obtain this data, called hidden/deep web? What project involves? Evaluate existing algorithms for a particular site, such as amazon. Implement the algorithm Project suited for a team of 2-3 students, for a period of 3 terms.

3. DSRG, WPI 3 Project 2: XML Views over relational databases Problem Provide an XML view of relational dbs Large number of users can access data in RDB. Use optimization capabilities in RDBMS. What project involves? Previous projects have done the following What is an XML view for a RDB? XML view is expressed in DTD, with some additional annotations. How to process queries specified over XML view? Translate queries to SQL, translate SQL results to XML. You will build on the existing projects and process updates specified on XML view. Project suited for 2-3 students over 2-3 terms.

4. DSRG, WPI 4 Project 3: SQL Optimization Problem Explore additional SQL optimization techniques (than what is available in commercial engines !!) Start with techniques already developed at WPI. You will implement these techniques into an open source SQL engine – postgresSQL What this project involves Students should be comfortable with SQL/relational algebra. Teams of 2-3 students over 3 terms.
