Philbert ran yesterday (“Yesterday” is an adverb because it answers ran “when” ? Philbert ran fast. (“Fast” is an adverb because it answers ran “how” ? Philbert ran very fast. (“Very” is an adverb because it answers fast “to what extent” ? How does one diagram an adverb? An adverb is a word that describes verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. 7 Diagramming an adverb is almost like diagramming an adjective in a sentence. Example Sentence :Philbertranfast 1) Draw the basic sentence diagram 2) Find the simple predicate(s) in the sentence (It’s a verb or verb phrase) 3) Find the simple subject in the sentence (Ask yourself, “ ‘Who’ ran? ‘What’ ran? ”. Whatever noun or pronoun in the sentence answers those questions is the simple subject(s) of the sentence. 4) See if there is/are a direct object(s) (complement(s)) in the sentence by asking yourself “ Philbert ran ‘who’? Philbert ran ‘what’?”. If there is/are a noun(s) or a pronoun(s) in the sentence that answers those questions, the sentence has a direct object. Are there any? 5) To diagram an adverb draw a slanted line under the verb that the adverb is describing. 6) Write the adverb on the slanted line underneath the word its describing Click on arrow to continue

8 If there is an adverb that is describing an adjective that is describing a noun or describing another the adverb do the following Example Sentence :Philbertranfastvery ranPhilbert fast The word “very” is an adverb describing “fast”. To diagram an adverb modifying another adverb do this. very
