2013 SHWEC Wisconsin Sustainability Internship Report Energy Reduction at Meriter Hospital – Dane Wudel Meriter Hospital Madison WI UW Solid & Hazardous Education Center
2
About Meriter Primary facility covers 628,842 square feet Annual electricity demand is roughly 24 million kWh Lighting accounts for 28% of electricity usage; the largest single contributor to this demand
3
Lighting Survey Document light fixtures throughout the hospital Look for remaining A19 and T12 bulbs scattered throughout Find energy efficient alternatives to current lighting schemes
4
Methods and Assumptions Took apart one of each fixture on a floor and documented the number and location of fixtures per floor Looked at one of each type (i.e. patient rooms) of room to avoid disruption to patients and staff Looked for potential savings with a payback period of about 5 years or less Strictly based on energy savings only
5
LED Lights Minimal energy usage Finally affordable 100% recyclable Longer lifespan; less maintenance No ballast needed Designed for retrofits Developed for most bulb types
