Agenda Parameters for group work Teamwork Personality test Why’s this matter? Lookin’ ahead to our genetics project

Parameters for group work What’s good group work look like? ◦ While watching, pay attention to what the groups look like while together. ◦ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PU4hFmHl evs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PU4hFmHl evs What does poor group work look like? ◦ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgET_c9g 8sc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgET_c9g 8sc

Disc Personality test You’re going to be taking a personality test to help you identify your strengths and weaknesses working in a group setting. ◦ This will help you understand where people are coming from. ◦ It will also “assign” you a job within your group. ◦ You’ll have a basis every day to guide your actions. If you finish early, begin writing a reflection on the back about whether you think this is an accurate description of you. ◦ Include support

Getting into your groups No complaining. ◦ Time to get real: in the real world, you have to work with people you don’t necessarily like. I don’t believe that I‘m going to be moving students around. You might want to get used to working with these individuals. Once in your groups, compare your results with your teammates.

Getting Into Groups As a group and just based off your results, come up with some potential challenges you are facing just based on your personalities. Be prepared to discuss these as a class.

Why’s this all matter? We’re going to be working on a unit long project that’s really going to challenge you and your teammates. ◦ It’s important first and foremost that you understand how to work in groups. ◦ Why does this matter?

Genetics project: why You need to take control of your learning. ◦ Especially within science In groups, you’re going to be researching, creating, and facilitating a lab on your own. In your group, you’ll present formally to the class. Why? ◦ Hard work, understanding group roles, leadership, etc.

Potential topics As a group, look over the list of potential topics that you could choose to work on. Come up with a list of your groups top three. ◦ These need to be numbered 1-3 with 1 being your first choice and 3 your last choice.

Potential topics How do environmental factors affect genetics? Does genetics influence blood types? Are bioengineered foods safe to consume? Does allele frequencies increase risk for Sickle Cell Anemia? How can we genetically modify a plant? Is alcoholism a genetic issue? Is genetic modification ethically responsible? What contributes to skin color? Is it genetically beneficial to be left-handed? Do we need all of our DNA?
