Lee The Battle of Gettysburg July 1-3, 1863 The Generals:The Battle: Lee invades the North and meets Union troops in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The 3 day battle extends throughout the area, including surrounding hills, wheat fields, and orchards. Union repels Lee’s invasion of the North and the Confederate troops are forced to retreat back to the other side of the Potomac. Both sides sustain heavy losses: 22,807 Union casualties and 28,000 Confederate casualties. Considered the turning point in the war.
