2 International Baccalareauate Mission Statement The International Baccalaureate Organization aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the IBO works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right. www.ibo.org

5 Creativity, action, service (CAS) The CAS requirement is a fundamental part of the programme and takes seriously the importance of life outside the world of scholarship, providing a refreshing counterbalance to academic studies. ibo.org 1.150 Hours over two years of the programme 2.Can begin accumulating/documenting hours summer after 10 th grade 3.Keep a log of hours and write reflections on activities 4.Work with CAS Coordinator at Enloe 5.Try to evenly divide hours between 3 areas: --Creativity --Action --Service

6 Creativity, action, service (CAS) The CAS requirement is a fundamental part of the programme and takes seriously the importance of life outside the world of scholarship, providing a refreshing counterbalance to academic studies. ibo.org Examples of Creativity: taking private dance or music lessons; planning and organizing an Eagle Scout project Examples of Action: playing Enloe baseball; organizing and playing an intramural community soccer tournament; Examples of Service: volunteering at WakeMed; volunteering at Ten Thousand Villages Combined Projects: working with youth group on a Habitat for Humanity House has the potential to combine all 3 components of CAS

7 Extended Essay The extended essay is an independent, self-directed piece of research, culminating in a 4,000-word paper. As a required component, it provides: practical preparation for the kinds of undergraduate research required at tertiary level an opportunity for students to engage in an in-depth study of a topic of interest within a chosen subject. ibo.org 1.Students work with a faculty mentor on a topic they choose. 2.Students can use the same topic to satisfy requirements for the Graduation Project. 3.Sample Subject/Topic Categories: Biology, History, Human Rights, World Religions, Physics, Mathematics, Social and Cultural Anthropology

8 Theory of Knowledge The theory of knowledge (TOK) requirement is central to the educational philosophy of the Diploma Programme. It offers students and their teachers the opportunity to: reflect critically on diverse ways of knowing and on areas of knowledge consider the role and nature of knowledge in their own culture, in the cultures of others and in the wider world. In addition, it prompts students to: be aware of themselves as thinkers, encouraging them to become more acquainted with the complexity of knowledge recognize the need to act responsibly in an increasingly interconnected but uncertain world. ibo.org ** ToK is a required course taught over junior and senior year; one semester each year.

9 Your Pre-Diploma Years at Enloe Honors Level courses in Math Science English Social Studies and Foreign Language (at least Level 1 of French, Spanish or Chinese) Successful completion of Freshman Seminar Drafting a 4 year plan with the IB Coordinator

10 IB Diploma Years -Begins in 11th grade Take course work in the six areas of the curriculum hexagon Many IB Courses are combined with AP courses At least one course taken from each subject group Internal assessments in courses, done by teacher External assessments (exams in May) Group 4 Project (science-10 hours) Extended Essay (4000 word) Theory of Knowledge course with essay/presentation Creativity, Action and Service Hours

11 How do you earn an IB Diploma? 24 of 45 points needed (1-7 points for each subject) -Language A1 -Language B (French or Spanish or Chinese or Russian*) -Individuals and Society (History) -Science -Math -Arts or substitute course from Group 2, 4, or 5 Extra 3 points for: -Extended Essay -ToK Essay CAS Hours (150) Internal Assessments by teachers Freshman Seminar (pre-Diploma preparation)

18 How do I become an IB Diploma candidate? Parental Consent and support/Intent letter— Rising 9 th graders You must have earned a 3.5 unweighted GPA by the end of your sophomore year Teacher recommendations

19 Why should I do IB at Enloe? An emphasis on internationalism and global understanding has never been so important as it is today. It provides you with the opportunity to reflect on the choices you make in giving back to the community, participating on a team, following your passion for music, etc. It provides you with the opportunity to really experience diversity in your classes and practice the notion of open-mindedness and tolerance. You will have well-trained teachers in both IB and AP curricula who will support you. You have the opportunity to earn a diploma that is recognized by universities internationally, as well as in the United States. You have the opportunity to earn college credit. You can distinguish yourself in order to improve your college admissions prospects.
