2 Early Years On January 15, 1929 Michael Luther King Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia. His mom was Alberta King. His dad was Michael Luther King Sr. Michael was the second oldest child. Michael’s dad was a pastor. He was hit with a baseball bat but he got right back up again. In 1934 Michael and his Dad changed their names to be Martin Luther King Jr. and Martin Luther King Sr.

3 Middle Years In 1944 Martin went to Morehouse College when he was only 15 years old. In 1947 He became his father’s assistant. Martin graduated from Morehouse. He begins school at Crozer. Graduates from Crozer. Martin Luther King Jr. marries Coretta Scott. In 1954 Martin becomes pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama.

4 Later Years In the ’s Fight for Freedom/Civil Rights Movement. Montgomery, Alabama Bus Boycott. Martin fought with words. December 1st 1955 Rosa Parks did not give up her seat to a white person. 1956 King and Lawyers go to court to defend car pool, it was against the constitution, this was issued by the Supreme Court. 1956 Bus boycott ended. 1957 Awarded Spingarn Medal. 1960 Moves to Atlanta, Georgia with his family. King had delivered his "I have a dream" refrains in his speech before 25,000 people in Detroit Cobo Hall immediately after the 125,000- strong Great Walk to Freedom in Detroit June 23,1963 August 28, 1963 gave his “I Have a Dream” speech. 1964 Awarded Nobel Peace Prize. 1965 African-Americans could vote. April 4, 1969 He was standing on his balcony when Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated.

5 Important Facts Martin was important because he helped change the ways people treat African-Americans today. Although one time someone bombed Martin’s House he showed kindness and forgave the person. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. loved listening to his father speak. His brother’s name was Alfred Daniel. His sister’s name was Christina. Martin Luther King Jr’s nickname was M.L. Boy was a name that people called Adult African- Americans to insult them. Martin grew up to hate segregation. Martin skipped grades 9 and 12. October 16, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial was opened in Washington D.C. The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial is 30ft tall.
