doc.: IEEE 11-13/1115r0 Submission Abstract This presentation gives an initial thought of one of possible vision of HEW-driven Wi-Fi in the future (maybe around 2020). Sept. 2013 Slide 2Minho Cheong (ETRI)

doc.: IEEE 11-13/1115r0 Submission When HEW Will Be Deployed (2020) Explosive increase of mobile data traffic –Number of smart devices rapidly increasing –Demand of higher data rate services increasing –Most of data traffics (over 80 %) will be generated at hot-spot or indoor Predictions of mobile traffic –NSN: 1000x –NTT DoCoMo: 500~1000x –Qualcomm: 1000x per area (compared to that of 2010) Sept. 2013 Slide 3Minho Cheong (ETRI)

doc.: IEEE 11-13/1115r0 Submission When HEW Will Be Deployed (2020) Requirements of future mobile data network –Cover 1000x data traffic –IoT connectivity (anytime anywhere any things) –Low-cost investment/operation for the network Risk reducing and nation-wide IT welfare (IT for anybody) –Energy-efficient communications Sept. 2013 Slide 4Minho Cheong (ETRI) 4 Revenue Traffic Volume Revenue & Traffic Gap Widening Time

doc.: IEEE 11-13/1115r0 Submission What Cellular is Now Doing 5 th Generation Cellular is trying to find a way to solve huge increase of mobile data traffic in the near future Sept. 2013 Slide 5Minho Cheong (ETRI) Spectrum Extension (MHz) Spectral Efficiency (b/s/Hz/cell) AP Density (# of AP in 1km 2 ) Remarks Cellular (2010)1200.5~110UMTS Gain of 5 th Gen. (compared to 2010) X 10 X 1000 in total

doc.: IEEE 11-13/1115r0 Submission What Will be the Future of Wi-Fi Wi-Fi’s strongpoint until now –Low cost to use –Higher throughput for short range relatively Can be Wi-Fi’s strongpoint preserved in the future? –Negative because cellular is trying to upgrade network in 5 th generation communications so that Wi-Fi cannot have higher throughput –Positive Still Wi-Fi is competitive thanks to its low cost Only if Wi-Fi can also have a good success in enhancement of its average user throughput and QoE a lot Sept. 2013 Slide 6Minho Cheong (ETRI)

doc.: IEEE 11-13/1115r0 Submission What Will be the Future of Wi-Fi? Becoming the good partner with an evolved cellular –As one of most promising small cell candidates co-operated with the cellular large cell network in a form of merged system which flexibly utilizes licensed/unlicensed band using cognitive radio –Need to be more competitive than other small cell candidates which are driven by the cellular (e.g., enhanced small-cell/femto- cell) Becoming the good & cheap substitute for the cellular network for a specific environments –Supporting higher throughput for a well-planned Wi-Fi network –Supporting large coverage connection & data service e.g.,) with the use of long-range Wi-Fi Sept. 2013 Slide 7Minho Cheong (ETRI)

doc.: IEEE 11-13/1115r0 Submission Up to What Level Wi-Fi Needs to Enhance To support long coverage service or/and –connections & data delivery To support cellular-comparable service –as a substitutes for a specified condition (planned without private) Sept. 2013 Slide 8Minho Cheong (ETRI) Spectrum Extension (MHz) Spectral Efficiency (b/s/Hz/cell) AP Density (# of AP in 1km 2 ) Remarks Cellular (2010)1200.5~110UMTS Wi-Fi (2010)550+0.001~??100~400up to 11n AP Wi-Fi Wi-Fi (2020)750~850 2~4 (0.3~0.7) 400 (2500) 4Mbps per 1m 2 Gain (vs. cellular 2010) X 7 X 4 (X 0.7) X 40 (X 250) X 1000 in total

doc.: IEEE 11-13/1115r0 Submission Up to What Level Wi-Fi Needs to Enhance It’ll be great if comparable to 5G cellular network –For a well-planned pure environments (specific application) –In terms of mobile traffic handled per area Then, spectral efficiency (bps/Hz/BSS) needs to be even better than that of the current 3G cellular network –Or almost similar to that if well-planned super-dense ones –PHY is already comparable or more. MAC needs to be upgraded Compared to the current Wi-Fi, spectral efficiency (bps/Hz/BSS) needs to enhance almost 100 times –Compared to worst case reported (<0.01 measured in Seoul, Korea) Sept. 2013 Slide 9Minho Cheong (ETRI)
