5 New NSW History Syllabus 7-10 In Depth Study 4: Rights and Freedoms, Stage 5 students will: explain the purpose and significance of early twentieth- century Aboriginal activism including the 1938 Day of Mourning protest for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples outline the rights and freedoms denied to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples before 1965 and the role and policies of the Aboriginal Protection Board, eg the control of wages and reserves.

7 Content in Stage 5 History includes: -the 1962 right to vote federally; Referendum; -Reconciliation; -Mabo decision; -Bringing Them Home Report (the Stolen Generations); and -the Apology and their significance for the civil rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Stage 5 students will examine -the UN declaration of Human Rights; and -Declaration and the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in the 'Rights and Freedoms' depth study. New NSW History Syllabus 7-10

9 The Review of Languages Education Policy in NSW developing targeted programming support materials for the K–10 Aboriginal Languages syllabus. The materials will provide support to Aboriginal community language teachers to implement the syllabus in primary and secondary schools throughout NSW establishing, together with the AECG, an online compendium of Aboriginal Language resources. The resources will be available on terms determined by the AECG, in consultation with communities and the Board

10 The Review of Languages Education Policy in NSW allowing more than one Aboriginal language to be taught during the mandatory 100 hours, as the location of some schools are on the boundaries of Aboriginal groups and more than one Aboriginal language is used developing a languages reclamation and revitalisation module for delivery within the HSC Aboriginal Studies course. This module would teach languages reclamation and revitalisation from a social science perspective

11 The Review of Languages Education Policy in NSW developing a Stage 6 Syllabus Framework for Aboriginal Languages. As a framework, the syllabus could have national application and be developed in collaboration and cooperation with other jurisdictions (as occurs for some community languages). In strengthening and extending Aboriginal languages education in NSW, Aboriginal custodianship will be acknowledged.
