5 The Challenges We’re Hearing
! Limited Resources and Budget Constraints: How can I consolidate and streamline my institution’s administrative and academic operations and systems to drive down costs and improve productivity? “Like everyone in the current financial climate, institutions have to do their fair share of belt tightening. We now call on all institutions to focus on delivering excellent services to students and our research base, and to manage their costs efficiently.” – David Lammy, Higher Education Minister, United Kingdom, March 18, 2010 interview in the Telegraph, “Warning Over University Budget Cuts” “As revenues are pressured and balance sheets weakened, we expect boards and management of universities to increasingly focus on operational management and improving their ability to respond to a rapidly changing environment.” – Moody’s U.S. Public Finance, U.S. Higher Education Outlook, 2009 ! Constant Concern & Issues Regarding Security & Privacy Risks: How can I ensure the information scattered throughout my institution is secure from unauthorized access and that privacy policies are protected while allowing my constituents to have appropriate access? “Lawmakers, regulators, and advocates are increasingly focused on data security and breaches of it. Data security is becoming a risk-management priority at universities.” – General Counsel, American Council on Education, March 2010

6 The Challenges We’re Hearing
! Fragmented, Unreliable or Inaccessible Information: How can I gather the complete and accurate information I need to improve my ability to forecast and evaluate alternatives, measure performance, and make informed decisions? “An increasingly complex and high-stakes environment for institutional information, including the need to aggregate a larger number of data sources, to provide more security without compromising authorized access and to adhere to regulatory and compliance demands, is prompting many institutions to consider more sophisticated and robust business intelligence(BI) solutions as a powerful tool to improve performance and demonstrate effectiveness.” – Ovum, Nicole Engelbert, Practice Leader Technologies Industries, April 2010 ! Inflexible Systems and Learning Environments: How can I support increasingly diverse and agile teaching and learning environments, provide tools to enhance student success, and improve the learner’s experience with the institution? “Ovum strongly encourages institutions to share data across their LMS, SIS, and CRM solutions; it is the ‘holy grail’ of relationship management as it creates a truly 360-degree view of the student’s institutional experience and includes a more complete and ultimately powerful set of factors influencing their success.” – Ovum, Nicole Engelbert, Practice Leader Technologies Industries, April 2010

7 A Closer Look… ! Fragmented, Unreliable or Inaccessible Information
“Most colleges and universities are awash in data. Unfortunately, they lack the capacity to seamlessly turn their data into meaningful information. Nor can they easily access, combine, & repurpose that information to support analysis, drive decision making, and improve student success.” – Donald M. Norris & Joan Leonard, Strategic Initiatives, Inc., 2008 “Unfortunately, unlike the corporate sector, higher ed does not have clear and concise definitions for productivity, nor does it have consensual agreements about the kinds of data that are needed to measure “academic” productivity — for instruction, for learning, or for institutional operations.” – K.C. Green, The Campus Computing Project

12 Effectively Measure & Manage Institutional Performance
Transformational Enabling New Things Effectiveness Doing the Right Things Efficiency Doing Current Things Right The objective of each layer is to support the layer above All the layers need to be aligned. You can’t expect an efficiency-based infrastructure to support a transformational business strategy Transformation can only occur within an efficient, effective environment TOP right diagram: When IT and the business are totally aligned, BI initiatives can be transformational. You can see from this graph the stages of the transformation, from efficiencies to insight that leads to action that leads to transformation. Left diagram: To avoid suboptimization and a silo-approach, a successful BI initiative is based on a solid infrastructure and reliable data, such as a data warehouse or at least a robust middleware layer. The data warehouse enables the next level: making sure the BI tools and Performance Management Applications can do their work. They enable the next level: users having access to the right information. To make sure this process is organized, organizations that have been successful with BI almost invariable have a BICC (business intelligence competence center) in place. Users, knowledge workers, managers are usually in charge of a certain business process or management process, so users enable the next level: achieving operational and management excellence. Operational and management processes enable the next level, they are put in place to reach institutional goals, such as ???????, ????????? or ????????. The most important objective of each layer is to enable the next level. A data warehouse is worth nothing if it is not being used to the max. It is not possible to build a business case other than efficiency if you don’t link BI to operational and management processes, and subsequently to the business strategy. The layers need to be aligned. It is not realistic to expect transformational business results from a data warehouse infrastructure that is built to simply enable an efficient information supply. Conversely, putting together a “next generation” data warehouse and a complete BICC to simply generate some management reports is overkill But the three levels of ambition we discussed build on each other. It is not possible to be successful with a transformative initiative, or a business case built on effectiveness, without at least a sufficiently efficient basis.

13 BI Standardization Requires a Foundation to Minimize Cost and Maximize Benefit
One Version of the Truth High Single solution – storage to scorecard Preconfigured BI apps Powerful self-service High scalability Consistent definitions Scalability There are different business cases to be made, ranging from tactical to more strategic. In the graph 4 different examples are plotted, arranged from low to high impact, and from IT to business driven. Low impact, IT driven: development efficiency. If you only have 1 BI tool, you can train everyone in the same tool. With the shortage of skills, there is more efficient IT resource allocation There are also more general cost savings. A better negotiation position with the vendor, lower TCO because of better maintenance Higher impact comes from improving scalability. If everyone can work of the same definitions and data, just in different ways there is no need for redundant storage. If you can use, within the same toolset, the right capabilities, the use of a single toolset is much more effective. For large deployments for casual users you can use just production reporting (instead of a complete BI toolset), for highly interactive use for knowledge workers the ad-hoc query capabilities (instead of another complete BI toolset) The biggest value add is to create one version of the truth. This improves transparency, accountability, decisiveness, confidence and business performance. Oracle BI delivers to these business cases, with a single solution, from Storage to Scorecard. Oracle offers preconfigured BI applications, that map against multiple business applications, drastically shortening implementation time, and lowering TCO. The capabilities are user self-service, saving significant on IT TCO, and creating scalability. One version of the truth, consistent definitions, are enabled through the common metadata model. Impact Cost Savings Development Efficiency Low IT Business

24 Continuum of Analytic Needs
Ad-Hoc Analysis Reporting Modeling Forecasting Future Oriented Static Dynamic Past Oriented One of the challenges when working on BI and Analytics is … defining the scope of BI. What does BI mean? What does BI cover? Is BI the same as reporting? I found this continuum a very good way of looking at BI. BI / Analytic requirements can be classified as part of a continuum. This slide is similar to one Mark already showed, with the difference that it looks at the continuum considering two dimensions: time – past oriented and future oriented – and interactivity – static or dynamic. The continuum covers a wide spectrum – from basic reporting, past-oriented and more static kind of analysis to advanced-analytics, forward looking and dynamic analysis. The continuum represents BI, and it also explains why depending on what part of the continuum your Institution is … BI can only mean reporting, or it can mean a lot more. Independently on where your Institution is in this Continuum, or what your Institution can or can not do today, one thing is for sure … your Institution has these analytic needs. And depending on how smart, agile and aligned your Institution is … is that your Institution can be more or less competitive in the market. The analytic needs we see in this diagram are very inter-related … one builds on top of the other one. For example: in order to do modeling and forecasting, you need to understand your historical data, understand trends, understand macro-variables so you can enter that into your forecast model. During this presentation we will go through this continuum, we will present use cases and examples and will talk about Oracle BI products and solutions and how Oracle approaches this continuum. CLICK FOR SLIDE BUILD To simplify the analysis, we can divide the continuum in 2 quadrants. One is the past oriented kind of analysis … and the other one is the future-oriented. For sure, as I was saying before, the future oriented analysis requires of historical data (that is why it is a continuum), but for simplicity, let’s divide in those two quadrants.

25 Continuum of Analytic Needs
PeopleSoft Customer PSQuery nVision Crystal PS SQR XML Publisher Warehouse with an OLAP tool EBS Customer Oracle Reports Oracle Discoverer Daily Business Intelligence Warehouse with OLAP tool OBIEE Plus BI Publisher Answers Dashboards Microsoft Office (SmartViews) Proactive detection & alerts Essbase Integration BI Applications Let’s focus first on the past oriented, static analysis, here is where you have the daily, weekly, monthly reports your Institution requires. From the purely operational reports to the more strategic reports, the analysis historical data and trends is a must have for all Institutions (without mentioning regulatory and compliance requirements). Some of you must be getting these reports from the transactional system, some others must have other repositories, like a data warehouse, or other type of repository, from where you get some of these reports. If you are a PeopleSoft Customer, for reporting and ad-hoc analysis you can be using a) Some of the PeopleTools Reporting tools and/or b) a data warehouse or similar type of repository with a Reporting tool on top of it (like Hyperion Interactive Reporting, BO, Cognos, etc). If you are an EBS Customer … Similar situation. You must be using some of the delivered EBS reporting tools, and/or a warehouse/repository with an OLAP reporting tool. While Oracle keeps supporting, and in some cases enhancing, some of those tools (under the Applications Unlimited program), the new Oracle BI foundation consolidates the functionality of those tools into OBIEE Plus. Oracle also offers BI Applications for pre-packaged content and analytics. You can see this as an evolution … If you are also attending some of the PeopleTools 8.50 sessions, you will hear about Query as a service, Related content (and Integration with OBIEE) and Essbase Integration. It shows how the PeopleSoft product line is making our customers evolve to the strategic BI foundation, while the other tools keep being supported. Same applies to EBS. The role of BI Publisher is also very important for ad-hoc analysis and reporting, and to produce pixel perfect reports. There are several sessions during OOW that focus on BI Publisher.

26 Continuum of Analytic Needs
PeopleSoft Customer ACE Excels Custom developments EBS Customer Essbase Integration with OBIEE Forecasting / Predictive Modeling Crystal Ball Data Mining The other type of analysis is what we call “Future oriented”/dynamic analysis. Forward-looking analysis is essential for any Institution that wants to spot opportunities and anticipate market changes. Most of the Institutions we have been talking to, use Excel to do this. But accurate modeling & forecasting simply isn't possible with isolated spreadsheets. Nor PeopleSoft or EBS provided any embedded what-if and forecasting capabilities. Most of our Customers found themselves using Excels to try to create those models. Oracle Essbase lets you easily analyze all your enterprise data to identify trends, conduct ‘what-if’ analyses and get instant, accurate answers to even the most complex queries. There are some other tools like Crystal Ball and Data Mining that complement the forward looking analysi, since they allow (through more complex statistical models) to forecast and predict future varialbles..
