2 Email: Electronic mail which allows individuals with an account to send messages to another person with an e-mail account. IRC: Internet relay chat was developed in 1988 by Jarkko Oikarinen and allows instant online communicating with someone else who is also online by typing messages back and forth. BBS: Bulletin board service allows a user to participate in a discussion group.

3 HTTP: Hypertext transfer protocol is used for handling the transmission of pages between a web server and a web browser. FTP: file transfer protocol is used to rapidly transfer files. Telnet: a program used on networks such as the internet to allow users to remotely log on to server on the network.

4 Gopher: one of the first widespread internet browsing services. Intranet: a network used by a single organization and only accessible by authorize users. Extranet: an extended intranet that provides various level of access to authorized members of the public.

5 Online profiling: a marketing technique that collects online data about consumers. Cookies: small files that contain information about the web sites an individual has visited. Firewall: a network security system that prevents unauthorized network access.

6 Client: a computer that access a server to request information. Bandwidth: the amount of data and the speed at which the data can travel over the transmission media. Usenet: a collection of servers that offer Netnews.

7 DSL: digital subscriber line Netiquette: the etiquette that should be followed when using a network. Ethernet: a widely used protocol for lans that uses a bus or star topology and connects the network devices by twisted-pair wiring, coaxial cable, or fiber optic cable.

8 Topology: the logical arrangement of the nodes on a network. Wireless Networks: a type a network that does not require the use of cables. Protocol: a standard

9 ISP: internet service provider is a company that offers access to the internet for a fee. Web Site: a series of related web pages. Network Interface Card: a circuit board that goes into the base unit of computer or other device in a line.
