Web Page Design Chapter 1 Introducing Networks and the Internet

Networks A combination of software and hardware that allows computer to exchange data and share software and devices, such as printers. –Allows users to reliably share and exchange data –Can reduce costs by sharing devices such as printers –Can be set up to allow users access to only specific files –Simplifies the process of creating backup copies of files –Allows users to communicate with e-mail

Network Classification By size, architecture and topology –LAN-Local-area Network Small areas such as building or campus –WAN-Wide area Network Over large geographical distances –MAN-Metropolitan Area Network Span a distance of up to 75 km –HAN-Home Area Network Personal devices within the home

Networks Operating system –Software that lets user to communicate with the computer Windows and Mac Network architecture –Client-server--group of computers called clients-connected to server –Peer to peer-no server—each computer considered equal

Networks Topology node –Node-location on the network capable of processing information Bus topology-single central cable that each node directly Star topology-attached to a hub in the center Ring topology-connected to form a closed loop

Transmission Media Joins the nodes on a network to enable communication Bandwidth-amt. of data and the speed at which the data can travel –Measured in bps (bits per second) –Bit-binary digit-smallest unit of information on a computer- single bit is 0 or 1 Twisted-pair Coaxial cable Fiber optic cable Wireless networks

Using a Network Netiquette –Etiquette on the Internet

The Internet Largest and most widely accessed network
