1 Copyright AARNet Pty Ltd 2009Copyright AARNet Pty Ltd Network systems, and Corporate focused systems Network systems have a very mature management model Designed around appliance style services on RHEL Three key reasons for appliance style CPE servers – Performance confirmation – Monitoring and measurement – Reliable data collection even in the advent of network events Corporate systems growing One Exchange server 4 years ago Over 45 Windows Server hosts now Growth to 65 by mid 2010 OPEX, CAPEX, and Green initiatives 1 AARNet’s Existing Systems Infrastructure

4 Copyright AARNet Pty Ltd 2009Copyright AARNet Pty Ltd 1 RU Acer R520 servers – Not enough size to justify blade chassis HDS iSCSI SANs – Existing IP knowledge, and little need for some of the more advanced FC features Extremely heavily distributed – 30 sites, from one node appliances, to proper clusters HDS WMS100, AMS2100 and SMS100 units Direct Attached Disk in some locations – Leverage software clustering features to improve performance, while minimising downtime impact Corporate and network oriented systems treated as separate, other than for ESX maintenance purposes Test and development clusters 4 AARNet’s Virtualisation Equipment

5 Copyright AARNet Pty Ltd 2009Copyright AARNet Pty Ltd Perception management – All too often the fall back position is “real” hardware because the lack of instrumentation to prove it’s not ESX’s fault Excessive resources requests – Due to many sites, and low density, not CAPEX or OPEX effective to overspec Network performance in virtual machines is lacking – Similar reasons as to why time servers don’t run well on virtualised hardware – TCP does not adapt nicely to stable high bitrates as distance increases with poor OS timing – Virtualisation management tools are designed with the DC in mind, not a distributed environment – Virtualisation vendors need to work with OS vendors for drivers out of the box Disk utilisation can cause issues – Investigating local SSD, and keen to be a first customer for HDS SSD Only seeing green wins in our corporate environment – Not surprising, as this is the environment that most closely matches the traditional DC Software vendors need to be held to account regarding use of virtual hardware 5 AARNet’s Virtualisation Issues
