POINTERS IN ESTABLISHING/MAINTANING A LOCAL STUDIES CENTER In drafting the goals/objectives Must be in line with the regional development thrust and the provincial development agenda; As part of the academe, it should be directly/indirectly articulated in the vision- mission of the university; University development plans should also be consulted;
POINTERS IN ESTABLISHING/MAINTANING A LOCAL STUDIES CENTER Academic based Should not be affected by a change of administration Created as a separate unit of an institution Will support institutional research program Shall earn the reputation of being the guardian of local identity
POINTERS IN ESTABLISHING/MAINTANING A LOCAL STUDIES CENTER Sustained Linkage Must establish link with the LGUs, NGOs, and other agencies Administration Must be under the executive officers of an institution, either the president or VP post Financial concerns Must have its own operational budget
SUMMING UP: BEYOND THE REGIONS: EFFORTS TO FOSTER NATIONAL IDENTITY THROUGH LOCAL STUDIES Local studies centers play a major role in the documentation of national identity Local studies centers are partners of the national government in reaching the grassroots level
SUMMING UP: BEYOND THE REGIONS: EFFORTS TO FOSTER NATIONAL IDENTITY THROUGH LOCAL STUDIES Educational institutions, through their local studies centers, could participate meaningfully in the overall process of educating the public regarding the details of our national heritage Local studies centers serve as link to the academic sector, the business sector, the government sector, and the community
SUMMING UP: BEYOND THE REGIONS: EFFORTS TO FOSTER NATIONAL IDENTITY THROUGH LOCAL STUDIES Appreciation from the academic institution of the role of a studies center could be measured by making it as a separate unit of the institution, providing a separate facility, adequate financial assistance, and qualified personnel.
SUMMING UP: BEYOND THE REGIONS: EFFORTS TO FOSTER NATIONAL IDENTITY THROUGH LOCAL STUDIES To maintain the dignity of the center, it should produce publications that are at par with the publications of major universities in Metro Manila. Research outputs should be evaluated by respected scholars to ensure credibility and reliability of the studies conducted. With such credibility, local studies centers shall be looked upon as the vanguard of cultural heritage conservation in the regions.
