1 September 13, 2018 Warm-Up: Complete the Prior Knowledge Questions on the activity sheet Take out the BrainPop quiz warm-up from Tuesday HOMEWORK: Review for quiz. Read chapters 2 & 3 in textbook. USA Test Prep due tomorrow.

2 Quiz Know that physical and chemical properties are characteristic properties that can be used to identify a pure substance Physical properties can be observed without changing the substance’s identity Physical properties include color, texture, state, shape, size, density, melting/freezing points, boiling/condensation points, conductivity, and magnetism Chemical properties are observed by changing the substance Chemical properties include flammability and reactivity Density is mass/volume

3 Chemical Properties Describe matter based on its ability to change into new and different matter with new and different properties These can be used to help identify a substance

4 Key Chemical Properties
Reactivity – the ability to form a new substance with one or more other substances Example: iron’s ability to rust Flammability – the ability to burn Example: paper’s ability to burn

5 Chemical Change Two or more substances combine and change into a new substance with different properties The atoms and molecules rearrange Examples: Iron + Oxygen = Iron Oxide (rust) Baking Soda + Vinegar = Carbon Dioxide Sodium + Chlorine = Sodium Chloride (salt)

6 Signs of a Possible Chemical Change
Bubbles & Fizzing New odors Color change Light and/or heat produced

7 Physical and Chemical Changes
Often reversible Substances stay the same chemically Includes changes of state, changes of shape, and dissolving Chemical: Rarely reversible New and different chemicals produced Includes burning and chemical reactions

8 Stations Stay with your group Record you observations
Decide whether you observed something PHYSICAL or CHEMICAL Decide whether you observed a PROPERTY or CHANGE Wear your goggles

9 September 13, 2018 Warm-Up: Complete worksheet
Take out GIZMO for turn in (if not given to me yesterday) Make sure you have answered the questions Put answers into i-Respond for assessment (each table has two class sets) if you and your partner didn’t finish with an 80 or better Take out Brainpop quiz sheet from Tuesday for review HOMEWORK: Read chapter 16, sections 1 & 2, and complete USA Test Prep by Friday – TOMORROW!
