Lewis and Clark Region Program Purpose Program Purpose Per Public Law No Child Left Behind Act Recruit quality teachers for America’s schools, with priority to schools serving low-income families Help relieve teacher shortages, primarily in Math, Science, Special Ed, and Vocational- Technical, but recruit all. Assist military personnel/veterans in moving to careers in K-12, public school teaching

9 Eligibility for Non-Financial Support
Lewis and Clark Region Eligibility for Non-Financial Support Referral and Placement Assistance Separated from active duty after 30 Sep 90 Had at least 6 years of service OR Are in Selected Reserve w/6+ years total service

10 Lewis and Clark Region Financial Assistance
Stipend: Up to $5,000 to assist with teacher certification costs. Must teach in school district serving students from disadvantaged families. Current teachers may use to add endorsements in critical needs subjects Bonus: $10,000 for new* participants who teach in schools that are defined as “high-need” schools. Both require 3-year teaching commitment. Maximum received can not exceed $10,000. *Exception for deployed teachers

Lewis and Clark Region Eligibility for Financial Assistance Bonus & Stipend Eligible Retired Active or Reserve Active duty member with one year or less before retirement Separated for physical disability on or after 8 Jan 02 Apply NLT 4 years after separation Currently serving in Reserves with 10+ years of service and commit to serving an additional 3 years Have served six years on active duty and transition into the Selected Reserve for 3 years on or after 8 Jan 02 Current teachers may be eligible for the 10K bonus when they return to teaching after a deployment

12 Fulfilling Teaching Obligation
Lewis and Clark Region Fulfilling Teaching Obligation Participants accepting a Stipend must teach for three years in: A. Any school in a district where 20%+ (or 10,000+) of students come from families with income below the poverty level. OR B. A School where 50%+ of students are eligible for free or reduced lunch or a “high percentage” are students with disabilities SO LONG AS the school district has 10%+ of students who come from families with income below the poverty level

Lewis and Clark Region Fulfilling Teaching Obligation (Con’t) Participants accepting a BONUS must teach for three years in: Any School where 50%+ of students are eligible for free or reduced lunch OR a “high percentage” are students with disabilities SO LONG AS the school district has 10%+ of students who come from families with income below the poverty level

Lewis and Clark Region Guard / Reserve Participation National Guard and Reserve eligible for program as of 2002 National Guard and Reserve participants who accept financial assistance must continue serving in the Guard or Reserves for 3 years or until retirement eligible.
