9 Discover - Map - Monitor - Alert - Report
Discovery Maps Monitoring Real-time graphs Reports WUG essentially provides 5 functional groups: Discovery – Mapping – Monitoring – Alerting – and Reporting. Typically the first step after installation is to run the discovery wizard, which provides several options to scan the customer‘s network, for example SNMP Smart Scan and IP Range Scan. The discovery results provide a list of discovered devices and also services and properties of the individual device. This data is stored in a Microsoft SQL database, and typically is the foundation for all Monitoring. Monitoring is a process that runs in the background as a Windows system service. The monitoring process covers all known and enabled devices as stored in the database. Monitoring is provided by a wide range of active, passive, and performance monitors. Each device object has a set monitor definitions, that instruct the monitoring process about what services and properties have to be monitored and what result is to be expected. Per device and service the monitoring process records the availabilty and performance data and stores it in the database. Monitoring includes SNMP trap, Syslog, and Windows Eventlog as passive monitors, and ICMP/Ping, SNMP, Port monitors, NT Service monitors, and a rich set of predefined application monitors like Exchange, SQL Server, monitor, HTTP, DNS, ... Etc. WhatsUp Gold only uses agentless monitoring technologies, that means that no addtional software will be installed on the monitored devices. For active and passive monitors conditions and expressions can be defined to distinguish normal operation from critical or no operation. In this case per device or service an alert can be started. WUG provides alert types like , SMS, Pager, Beeper, Text to speech, Webalert, Program action and others. WUG‘s report features access this stored performance and availabilty information and on demand generate reports out of a repository of more than 150 standrad reports. Individual users can create and design theit own workspaces with up to 15 favorite reports per workspace view. Workspace views can also embed real time graphs that are povided by an addtional high frequeny polling process. Unlike the standard reports, that cover recent or historical data, those real-time reports present status data that is actual up to the second. Reports and workspaces can fully accessed via Web browser (IE and Firefox). Service staff, administrators, and IT managers can create individual workspace views depending on their demand. Alerts
