3 Polish pharmacist and petroleum industry pioneer : 1853 he invented the modern kerosene lamp 1853 he introduced the first modern street lamp in Europe and the construction of the first oil well in Poland (1854). 1856 he built the first oil refinery in the world; among his other achievements were the discovery of how to distill kerosene from seep oil

4 Kerosene lamp In 1853 Ignacy Łukasiewicz together with Jan Zeh, was the first in the world to distill clear kerosene from seep oil. The first oil lamp in the world appeared in the streets of Lwów (Ukraine) in March 1853.

5 The kerosene lamp (widely known in Britain as a paraffin lamp) is a type of lighting device that uses kerosene (British "paraffin", as distinct from paraffin wax) as a fuel. Kerosene lamps have a wick or mantle as light source, protected by a glass chimney or globe; lamps may be used on a table, or hand-held lanterns may used for portable lighting.
