Ignacy Łukasiewicz. Ignacy Łukasiewicz The beginning of vocational drilling education is closely connected with Ignacy Łukasiewicz. In years 1852-1853 at the back of a pharmacy Ignacy Łukasiewicz carried out researches on crude oil. After purifying that liquid he obtained kerosene. On 31st July 1853 kerosene lamps designed by Łukasiewicz were flared up in a hospital in Łyczaków - Lwów for the first time.

The date of 31st July 1853 is considered to be the origins of the Polish drilling industry. The discovery made by Ignacy Łukasiewicz changed the face of Galicia and consequently the world at that time. There was a significant development in the civilisation progress. A true visionary – Łukasiewicz was convinced that the education of workers must be established as a result of a quick development in the oil industry. The first oil school was started on his own initiative. Krosno basin – Oil well „Ignacy”

Practical School of Canadian Drilling. In 1885 the first vocational drilling school was founded within the area of the oil mine in Ropianka near Dukla. The school was called Practical School of Canadian Drilling. A building in Ropianka, which used to be called „school”, has run to ruin.

In 1888 the school was moved to Wietrzno and two years later it was run under the name of Regular Drilling School. In 1896 the school had to be transferred again to Borysław and changed its name. Untill 1908 it was called Junior School of Mining and Drilling. The school was reorganised and adapted to educate the rig and mine managers. The name was also changed – the school was called National School of Mining and Drilling.. An obelisk which commemorates the school in Ropianka

State School of Drilling. In 1928 because of quickly developing oil industry, the school also started educating the supervisors of the oil mining movement. At that time the school was given a new name – State School of Drilling. The education in this school was two years long and the classes took place twice a day – in the mornings and in the evenings, which enabled students to work in the mines and attend classes. It is the only school in Poland with such a long mining tradition. Only a few years ago a similar school in Piła was reactivated. 11 Our school cooperates closely with the oil and drilling industry, what is more, the school is under the patronage of Polish Oil and Gas Company (PGNiG), which funds scholarships for the best students. Innovative dual training is also provided and it enables students to compare the theory with the practical skills..

Among the secondary schools in Europe only in schools in Poland, Ukraine and Romania students can gain qualifications in drilling.

After 70 years of education, there are about 20 thousand of our graduates who: - work in oil fields in the whole world, - perform various functions in many companies in Poland, - they also work at universities.
