1 Interactive Online Activities for Learning Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, and Fluid Mechanics Yakov E. Cherner, ATeL, LLC, Swampscott, MA ycherner@ATeLearning.com Doyle V. Davis New Hampshire Community Technical College, Berlin (NH) Presented materials have been developed with a partial support from the National Science Foundation under the Grants No. DUE-9850326, DUE-0053286, DMI-9961270, and DMI-0110363. 2 The majority of technical college students and corporate maintenance/service staff are more empirical than abstract learners. Students are better at learning concepts if they have experience with concrete phenomena that are being studied and if they are aware of the potential applications and usefulness of the knowledge they are acquiring. 3 Realistic visualization, high interactivity and rich functionality of the ATeLs educational modules and components help teachers to: spark students interest and engaged them in learning science, technology and engineering, introduce complex and sometimes abstract concepts in the context of familiar real-world processes, devices and situations. 4 Educational tools support most effective learning strategies including: conceptual learning learning-by-doing problem-based learning just-in-time learning. Visualization and high interactivity motivate students towards learning science and technology and make it more fun. Copyright 2006 ATeL, LLC

5 Simulations, Virtual Experiments, Interactive Lessons, Problem Solving Tutor, Troubleshooting Tutor, scriptable and animated Instructor's Assistant, assessment tools, ancillary tools, and more… Educational modules comprise: The components can be used independently or in conjunctions with each other. 9 Target audience Academic education: students and teachers at secondary and post-secondary schools from fifth grade to universities students with disabilities. Corporate and military training: corporate technicians and engineers managers, sales and marketing professionals customer education. military technical personnel Copyright 2006 ATeL, LLC

10 Simulations and virtual experiments can be used as warm-ups, post-class tasks, or self-learning activities in traditional instructions. a single open computer-based learning environment in conjunction with other online materials, hands-on activities, and printed textbooks supplementary materials to existing curricula in the form of separate self-contained components. The simulations can substantially enhance classroom lecture experiences. ATeL software is an irreplaceable tool for distance learning. Interactive e-learning activities can work well in many settings both outside and inside the classroom, over the Web, Intranet or on a stand-alone computer. Copyright 2006 ATeL, LLC
