3 MAYFLOWER 100 people arrive in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620 Of these 27 were pilgrims seeking religious freedom PURITANS-type of pilgrim

4 What is a Puritan In England many individuals believed that the Church of England was too Catholic and desired reform Viewed themselves as soldiers in a war against Satan Wanted to purify Christianity and had lost hope that it could be reformed from within so they separated themselves

5 What is a Puritan Queen Elizabeth died and they became political targets Went to Holland, South Africa, America Became strangers in a strange land City upon a hill- ideal society

8 The Five Points of Calvinism T otal Depravity- Original Sin; Sin has affected all parts of man. The heart, emotions, will, mind, and body are all affected by sin U nconditional Election- He chooses the elect according to the kind intention of His will (Eph. 1:4-8; Rom. 9:11) L imited Atonement- Jesus died for the elect. I rresistible Grace-When God calls his elect into salvation, they cannot resist. P erseverance of the Saints- once saved, always saved.

9 Puritans and Education Placed great emphasis on the Bible Founded Harvard College in 1636 Bible was their model for writing Most common forms of Puritan writing were diaries and histories that showed the workings of God Plain, meditative writing style

10 Plain Style Simple, straight-forward Rejected the fancy, learned, quote-heavy style of the time (Who in England was writing in this style?) Attention on the message not the messenger Puritan sermon traditionally comprised three parts: doctrine, reasons, application
