Community planning - Abandons Personal Decision MakingAbandonment of personal decision making became common in socialist Germany in the late 19th and early 20th centuries Planners claimed they could handle common problems with foresight Planners actually create economic problems by promising to relieve us of solving our own economic problems IMAGE: Beverly A. A Former Marxist Economist: Robert L. HeilbronerCapitalism organizes the material affairs of humankind more satisfactorily than Socialism, because… Inequitable and irresponsible marketplaces distribute better than planned economies IMAGE: Beverly A. Over time, planners will never have enough information to carry out the allocation of resources reliably Freely moving markets are superior to any order the human mind can design, because They create spontaneous order and more efficient allocation of resources than intentional design or planning QUOTATION: Beverly A. Goldstein, Ph.D. © August 30, 2013
Planning Controls Us Cradle GraveExcessive planning structures give bureaucrats [staffs of experts] discretion and coercive power [backed by the authority of government and non-government entities] to impact how we are and will be allowed to live and work, and embraces all activities of our lives from cradle to grave Beverly A. Community planning - Assault on our Intellectual LibertyIMAGE: The more government “plans,” the more difficult planning becomes for individual people. In NE OH, ‘scenario planning’ is consciously directing our resources to conform with NEOSCC’s views of who should have what, and on what terms, and outcomes will be an assault on our intellectual liberty. NEOSCC planners are directing distribution to their chosen and preferred communities and groups, eliminating the general public’s power –that would be us - of choice. Beverly A. Goldstein, Ph.D. © August 30, 2013 Page xi, 10, 34, 38
Community planning - Assault on our SecurityBureaucrats generally claim that they are compelled to accomplish this planning due to circumstances beyond their control When intellectual leaders grant planned security to favored groups, they increase the insecurity of the rest of the population – this is why we are here today Historically, achieving security by state-supported restrictive measures has produced regressive transformations of societies Extolling security at the expense of freedom is lethal to society. Rule of Law – Should Safeguard EqualityThe “Rule of Law” is to safeguard equality before the law. Central planning is counter to the “Rule of Law.” Under central planning, the government Is not impartial Ceases to allow individuals the fullest development of their individual personalities Deliberately discriminates between particular needs of different people IMAGE: Beverly A. Goldstein, Ph.D. © August 30, 2013 Page 27
Rule of Law – Should Safeguard EqualityWhen laws and regulations authorize a board or commission to regulate and implement what it pleases, its actions are legal BUT ITS ACTIONS ARE NOT SUBJECT TO THE RULE OF LAW IMAGE: Beverly A. Goldstein, Ph.D. © August 30, 2013 Page 27
Competition vs. PlanningIMAGE: IMAGE: Competition dispenses with intentional social control, and does not require coercive or arbitrary intervention of any planning authority. Planning and competition can only coexist by planning FOR competition, not planning AGAINST it. Beverly A. Goldstein, Ph.D. © August 30, 2013 Page 11, 12
De Tocqueville: Socialism ≠ Democracy They are IncompatibleIMAGE: Socialism, an entirely authoritarian dictatorial form of government, recognized as the gravest threat to freedom. Socialists believe that our competitive economic life should be substituted for and ‘consciously directed,’ by ‘economic planning.’ Historically, movements which begin as Socialist end in Totalitarianism. Per De Tocqueville, democratic republics stand in irreconcilable conflict with Socialism. Page 3, 12, 13 Beverly A. Goldstein, Ph.D. © August 30, 2013
De Tocqueville: Socialism ≠ Democracy They are IncompatibleDemocracy seeks equality in liberty, Socialism seeks equality in restraint, servitude and outcomes. Beverly A. Goldstein, Ph.D. © August 30, 2013 Page 3, 12, 13
Collective vs. Individual Freedom‘Collective freedom’ is not the freedom of the members of society, but the unlimited freedom of planners to do with society what they please. The quest for a great utopian society is not achievable, and ultimately leads to the destruction of freedom. IMAGE : Beverly A. Goldstein, Ph.D. © August 30, 2013 Page 9, 23
Dictatorships Evolve from Central PlanningPlanning leads to dictatorship because dictatorship is the most effective instrument of coercion… and is essential to successful central planning. Planning centralizes economic power through political power, and creates a degree of dependence hardly distinguishable from slavery. Beverly A. Goldstein, Ph.D. © August 30, 2013 IMAGE: Page 5, 17

Enthusiasm for ‘Organizing’ is the Wrong ChoiceHayek: Planning heads us in the wrong direction adoration for the state vs. the individual fatalistic acceptance of unscientific ‘inevitable trends’ enthusiasm for the ‘organization’ of everything, which we call planning Beverly A. Planning Heightens PowerPlanners Require Centralized Power Planners must create power – power over men wielded by other men Power is infinitely heightened by concentrating it through planning IMAGE : Beverly A. Goldstein, Ph.D. © August 30, 2013 Pages 3, 4
Knowledge is also Power, the first weapon in our arsenal of defense.Intellectual Dishonesty – no matter how clear the evidence, people can always find an interpretation that will allow them to cling to what they want to believe – ignoring the evidence ID afflicts large segments of our population and prevents correct decision making Facing true situations based on facts requires courage and honesty.
