4 What does this Course Cover? Folder and File Management Navigate the CPIT network, manage folders, search for folders and files Internet & World Wide Web Practical searching skills Ergonomics Health & safety of computer users in the workplace

5 What does this Course Cover? Microsoft Office - Word Produce a professional standard document Microsoft Office - PowerPoint Create a slideshow suitable for a presentation Professionalism, Security & Safety On the CPIT network and in the workplace

6 Classes and Course Timetable Two sessions per week for 14 weeks Each session is in a computer lab NEW material presented every session Timetable Viewer on CPIT Infoweb Term breaks and public holidays Exam Weeks – written final exam

7 Assessments Three assessments - ALL compulsory Assessment 1(25%) Written Assignment (hand in by due date) and Practical Test (in normal lab time) - Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 3 Assessment 2(50%) Two Practical Tests (in normal lab time) - Learning Outcome 4 Assessment 3(25%) Written Exam (at special exam time) - Learning Outcome 5 To pass the course, you must get … At least 40% in Assessment 3 An average of 50% over ALL assessments

8 Attendance Attend ALL classes ON TIME If you miss a session you are expected to catch up in your own time. Material will not be re-covered. Overseas students – 80% attendance is required for student visas

9 Course Information & Material Course Outline – has a diary showing each lesson and its main topics as well as key dates. Course Handouts/Notes – may be provided with information or directions to on-line material. Course Material – all material used in class will be available on-line via the course Moodle site. The Library has good textbooks and e-books.

10 Hours of Study Total Study Time should be 150 hours – Class time: 14 weeks x 4 hours = 56hrs – Tutorials: 1 hour per week = 14hrs – Study and self-directed learning (workbooks): 80hrs Lessons are NOT REPEATED Class time is for learning new skills Work on additional exercises in your own time

11 Classroom Etiquette Classes start on time No food in the computer labs Drinks – Covered sipper bottle of water – Coffee-2-Go with lids Remove your rubbish

12 Computer Labs Empty Computer Labs – General access - available any time – Restricted access - get your Polycard coded to allow entry Classes in Computer Labs – Ask the tutor if you can use an available computer – Do not talk or print during the lesson

13 User ID / Login Your unique user code for the CPIT network Change your initial password (and remember it!) Use the same UserID and Password for Network (computer) login Moodle Student management system (for results) Student email

14 Moodle Website Check you are enrolled in CICT410/DICT410 (the self-enrolment key is cict410 ) Has all course information, material, and notices Continually added and updated Use your network login and password

15 Internet & Printing Internet - free ( when fully paid) Printing – free initial amount – buy more using the kiosks and your Polycard Library – extra printing facilities – open Monday to Friday from 8am

16 Course Handouts Have them with you in class Keep your course material in folders Keep your diary and course details in one place Soft Copies available on Moodle or P:Drive

17 If you are absent for a test… Get a message to your tutor asap – Email the tutor directly – Call the Department of Computing Operations Manager (number in course outline) Alternative test when you are able If your study is seriously affected because of accident or sickness, talk to the Operations Manager to look into alternative options

18 Study Groups Form a study group of 2-3 people Why … – Talk over material to help understanding – Help keep each other on track – Make study/learning a shared routine – Friendly faces to meet up with Like having a training buddy

19 Student Notices Check the website for general CPIT notices Check the course MOODLE site Read any notices on the screen before you log in Watch for notices on the classroom door Check for cancelled classes
