10 What Year Was It Made In? The Port Authority Building was built in 1963 by Hobbs Winning and Leighton. It was built to accommodate the then Fremantle Port Authority's existing staff in one building instead of the pre-existing eight buildings around the wharf area. 12 Materials used Foundations:120 'Franki' piles Lighting: controlled natural lighting from the north and south Windows are anodised aluminium frames glazed with anti- glare glass and are completely reversible, allowing all window cleaning to be carried out from within the building. Tiling: tiling for both exterior wall finish and interior wall decoration Exterior tiling gives a permanent sparkling effect, and reduces maintenance to a minimum Ground floor roof: It is a folded roof pattern of pre-stressed concrete units in two spans each of 20 metres. 18 Why Was It Constructed? Its construction resulted from Federation – when the Commonwealth took over responsibility for customs and excise. It was the first purpose built customs building in Fremantle and functioned as the main branch of the Customs Department of Western Australia from this time.

29 How was it Constructed? It was constructed with convict labour, and some subcontractors. Constructed from brick,limestone and jarrah. The limestone mortar was repaired in 1979 with concrete, but is now causing damage to the limestone and so the replaced mortar is now itself being replaced with lime mortar.
