4 BASIC INFORMATION The Czech Republic is situated in the middle of Europe. It borders on Slovakia, Austria, Poland and Germany. The borders are lined by the mountains. The Giant mountains are the highest mountains. (The highest mountain is Sněžka - 1602m). The lowlands line along the rivers. The most watery river is the Elbe, the longest one is the Vltava. An alleviative oceanic type of climate with western circulation appears mostly. The population of the Czech Republic is 10,3 mil., with national minorities of Slovaks, Poles and Germans. While 46 million people travel abroad, 101 million tourists visit the Czech Republic every year. (1994). CZECH REPUBLIC

7 POLITICAL SYSTEM The Czech Republic is a democratic parliamentary republic. The president and the government has the executive power. The government proposes the legislation. It is responsible to the Chamber of Deputies. President is the head of the state. The parliament is double-chambered – with the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. 200 members are voted to the Chamber of Deputies and 81 senators to the Senate. CZECH REPUBLIC

8 LANDMARKS Czech lands were confronted with many different cultural influences during the course of history. Rich cultural heritage was preserved there. There are 12 registered landmark reservations in the Czech Republic, acknowledged by the international organization UNESCO. The most significant is Prague and its historical centre. CZECH REPUBLIC

9 NATURAL ASSETS The Czech natural assets is protected by many wilderness areas and nature preserves. There were declared four national parks in hight protect mode. Our streams of mineral water are used as curative methods or table water. CZECH REPUBLIC

10 INDUSTRY AND AGRONOMY The Czech industry has a long-term tradition. A share of food- processing industry has increased in last years. On the other hand a share of engineering has fallen off. Anyway engineering is still pretty important branch of industry in Czech Republic. A production of flour, sugar, meat and beer is valued for food industry. There is a tradition in keeping fresh water fish - that´s why our fishpond managment is so developed. CZECH REPUBLIC

15 BRIEF HISTORY 30, 000 years ago – first residence of huntsmen (the oldest usage of hard-coal in the world) 8 th century - there were 3 castles 1763 – in the town area was found a coal-seam Second half of 19 th century - big industrial development, foundation of Vitkovice steel, Ostrava became an industrial centre of Habsburg Monarchy 1930s - departments stores Bachner, Brouk a Babka 14 th March 1939 - the occupation of German army 30 th April 1945 - freedom of Ostrava by Soviet army 1949–1951 - building of Arcelor Mittal, the city became the steel heart of the republic 1997 – great flooding in Ostrava View of Ostrava, 1855 Venus from Petrkovice

17 TOURIST ATTRACTIONS ZOO Ostrava – more than 900 animals Industrial centre – authentic buildings of the mines Museum of mining – origination and developmnet of coal-mining Miniuni area – You can see there thumb-nails of European buildings Vitkovice – authentic zone since 19 th century

19 LEISURE TIME The Stodolni Street – more than 60 restaurants, cafés and night- clubs situated on this street Beskydy Mountains – national park not far from Ostrava peak – Lysá Hora (altitude 1,323 m)

22 BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT OUR SCHOOL We have been educating by course of education program the KEYS TO THE WORLD since 1st Septembre 2008. Number of pupils: 404 Number of teachers: 28 Number of classes: 19 Headmaster: Mgr. Martin Pail

23 EXTENDED EDUCATION OF LANGUAGES Pupils start learning their first foreign language- English-in the first class. The second one – French, German or Russian – starts in the 6th class.

24 ECOLOGY-MINDED The second specific target of our school is enviromentalism. We are members of the Ecological education club and we also cooperate with ZOO Ostrava and sponsor the animals in ZOO. Regularly we are placed in town competitions about ecology and arrange the Earthday exhibitons. We were awarded the prize Ecoschool in 2005.

25 INFORMATICS The third specific target is our active work in the ICT area. Our PC room is furnished with very modern ICT technology. We arrange the ICT courses and we were awarded the certificate Information centre of government Information policy in education by Ministry of Education.
