2 So before clicking any further, we’ve talked about this before
So before clicking any further, we’ve talked about this before. In your head, think about it: what are some pieces of evidence scientists would use to try to convince someone that evolution happens?...

3 Did you really think about it? Could you remember at least one thing?...

4 What do all primates have in common?
Opposable thumbs Binocular vision Flexible shoulders

5 Primate Evolution Here’s the order of who broke away from the common ancestor we all share, from first to last: lemurs/lorises, tarsiers, new world, old world monkeys, gibbons, orangutans, gorillas, chimps, humans

6 So who did today’s humans (Homo sapiens sapiens)
most recently evolve from?... common ancestor Hominids: 4-6 mya “Apes” include gorillas, orangutans, and chimpanzees Ardipithecus mya Australopithecus (a type of hominid): mya Homo habilis: mya Homo erectus: .5 – 2.0 mya Homo sapiens: .5 mya Neanderthals: 30,000 years ago Cro-magnon humans: 10-40,000 years ago Homo sapiens sapiens: that’s us!

7 Smithsonian Human Origins Family Tree (interactive website)

8 So where did all of this happen?...

9 Human Migration So how far did YOUR ancestors travel out of Africa?...

10 Another way to see it…

11 Who are your relatives? Who are your ancestors?...
How’d they even find Lucy?... How did Lucy become a fossil?... So how did you become the mammal that you are? Who did you evolve from? Have mammals really been around that long?...

12 In your notebook, EXPLAIN three things all primates have in common that suggests we have a common ancestor.

13 Do page 175 #2, 4, 5, 6 (time permitting).
Using either this powerpoint or a copy of the older hardcover book from the front table (Chapter 6.3), please answer the following in your notebook (right below where you just answered the previous question): If you see or read the word “hominid” or “hominin” and you get a mental image of something/someone in your head, describe what you’re thinking about to me. Where did Homo sapiens – ALL Homo sapiens – originally evolve from (as in, geographically speaking)? What is a Neanderthal? Are you related to Neanderthals or did you descend from them? Do page 175 #2, 4, 5, 6 (time permitting). (there’s a difference!)
