1 Normal gastric mucosa. (A) The epithelial component of the gastric mucosa consists of surface foveolar epithelium that is connected to the deep secretory component by gastric pits. In the body and fundus, the secretory component is predominantly made up of oxyntic glands. The inset highlights a parietal cell (arrowhead) and a chief cell (arrow). (B) In the cardia, antrum, and pylorus, the secretory component is predominantly made up of mucous secreting cells.
