B-77 Activity 20- Identifying Rock Types(B-38) Analysis Questions Objective: Today we will identify different rock types based on their characteristics. Daily Question: Explain how each of the following rock types are formed: Igneous, Metamorphic, and Sedimentary.

2 Types of Igneous Rocks:. - Intrusive: magma cooled inside
Types of Igneous Rocks: - Intrusive: magma cooled inside the Earth (Ex: Granite) - extrusive: magma cooled outside the Earth (Ex: Obsidian) - Fossil: formed during the gradual layering of sediments from dead plant or animal remains.

3 Vocabulary: Metamorphic Rocks Can be: Sedimentary rocks can be:
Foliated: Ribbon-like layers (ex: gneiss) Non-Foliated: no ribbon-like layers (ex: marble) Sedimentary rocks can be: Clastic: made of broken pieces of rock (ex: conglomerate) Organic: made form decomposed material (ex: coal) Chemical: made from minerals that have evaporated and react with other chemicals (ex: limestone)

4 Activity 20- Identifying Rock Types
Procedure: Use Student Sheet 20.1 “Rock Data” to complete Activity 20 Follow the procedures on pages B-39 to B- 40 PRECISELY! Analysis Questions: 1-4

6 In which type of rock do you think you would find valuable natural resources? Explain.

7 Score 4.0 In addition to Score 3.0, you can teach another student about rocks, minerals and the rock cycle. You are able to describe the uses of rocks and minerals in real-life scenarios. Score 3.0 Student Can: Identify the minerals that make up rocks. Know the uses of rocks & minerals. Explain the rock cycle and how it works. Identify the 3 types of rocks and recognize common examples. Score 2.0 With no help, you can identify some rocks and minerals but have trouble explaining the rock cycle and recognizing common examples. Score 1.0 With help, you have trouble identify some rocks and minerals and have trouble explaining the rock cycle and recognizing common examples.
