1 Rise of Totalitarianism in Germany

2 HW Review: Differences between Communism and Fascism?

3 Mussolini's Fascism vs. Stalin’s Communism
Similarities: Both promote extreme nationalism and total obedience to government authority Both outlaw political opposition and freedom of speech Both used propaganda, secret police & indoctrination techniques Both build up and glorify military force and use military to control and/or annex neighboring countries Differences: Communism utilizes a state controlled economy while fascism has a capitalist economy (private ownership of business) Fascism did not promise a classless (economically equal) society but exploited the class system and nationalism and (in Hitler’s case) racism. Soviet “hammer and sicle” Nazi swastika symbol Italy’s Fascist symbol: a bundle of sticks tied together
