3. English 10AB 11th Grade AP English Language
Common Core Standards:
All instructional components focus on argument, exposition (including literary analysis), and narrative, and integrate the skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking to fully prepare for college and career readiness.
At San Pedro High students, teachers, and parents work together to make learning better!

4. English 10AB Syllabus Highlights:
Expectations:
Students are not here to fail!
Materials required for class include a composition book (RWNB), 2 pens black and blue, 2 pencils, 2 highlighters, a folder, notebook, or binder with notebook paper.
Class assignments include daily RWNB entries 1 ½ pages or more, partner and small group discussions and other reading and writing assignments, AR reading, close reading and annotating of a variety of texts, and timed essay writings.

Two district timed writing assessments as preparation for the 11th grade State Smarter Balance Computer testing

5. 11th Grade AP English Language and Composition Syllabus Highlights:
Students are not here to fail! AP timed essay writing includes argument (Accuplacer), analysis of an author’s argument (new SAT essay beginning March 2016), and synthesis. There will be OTHER writing assignments as well. Most reading will be completed outside of class. Class time will be used for seminars, discussions, group presentations, practice m/c questions, and timed writings. The more time students spend outside of class preparing, the better prepared those students will be for the AP exam AND for college. Upcoming tests: PSAT, Wednesday, October 18, 2017 SAT/ACT begins January 2016 State Smarter Balance April 2018 AP English Language Exam Wednesday, May 16, 2018

6. Grading Criteria A = Advanced (A), AP 7-9, SBAC/SAT/SPHS 4, +
P=Proficient (B,C), AP 6, SBAC/SAT/SPHS 3, 
B=Basic (D,F), AP 4-5, SBAC/SAT/SPHS 2, --
BB=Below Basic/Missing/Incomplete (F), 1-3, 1, --
Student work is assessed using rubrics/scoring guides and evidence of learning and growth through mastery of skills taught.
Final course grades are based on the level of work at which your student consistently performs.
I have come to believe if a student is receiving a D, the student is not performing to the best of his/her ability. All students have every opportunity to earn at least a C in this course through revision practices.

7. LAUSD/SPHS Attendance Policy & Class Partication
A maximum of 7 full day absences/28 TOTAL class period absences are allowed during the current school year.
At the 8th full day absence and/or 29th class period absence, FOR ANY REASON, the student’s name will appear on the Non-Participation STOP CLEARANCE LIST.
**Class participation: Absences definitely impact final course grade!!
