Choropleth Maps Too much fun!!!

What is a choropleth map? Have a guess!

Is this a choropleth map? Look at the three dot points above to help you decide.

What about this one? Look at the legend to help you decide.

Choropleth Map Simply put …a map that uses different shadings of a colour to tell us how much of something there is in a particular place Using WOW words... a map that uses graded differences in shading or colour inside defined areas on the map in order to indicate the quantities in those areas

Is this a good example of a choropleth map? Why or why not?

Task: You are going to create your own choropleth map Step 1: Using the contents page in your Atlas (or online) find a map of the world that includes labelled countries. Step 2: Find the countries listed in your data table (provided in the next slide) on the A3 map of the world you have been given. Step 3: Label the countries listed onto your blank A3 map like this: MISSBISILIA Or if the country is too small to write inside use a ruler and a pencil to do this: MSMCGUIRELAND

Raw data for choropleth mapping activity

Instructions above are for Myers, Tolkien and any students who wish to work independently – teachers to go over instructions step by step with Rodda and Jennings and students who are not clear on the task.

Find the countries listed in the table and label them on this map (which will be provided to you). Add in the choropleth colours you have chosen and a legend that shows what each colour means.
