African Elephants Going Extinct

Physical Characteristics The body is gray and it has a long nose called a trunk. They have ivory tusks to dig for water and strip the bark off of trees. They weigh up to 5,000 to 14,000 lbs. Their height at the shoulder is 8.2 to 13 feet high. At birth elephants weigh 200 lbs and are 3 feet tall

Physical Characteristics page 2 The African elephant has four molars each weighing up to 11 lbs. At forty to sixty years of age they no longer have teeth and eventually die of starvation. The elephants trunk is 7 feet long. The elephant has four legs, the back legs are bigger than the front legs.

The way African Elephants The African Elephant lives in herds. They eat fruit, grasses, roots and bark. A male elephant is called a bull and a female elephant is called a cow. The African Elephant is the largest land animal in the world, and this scares off smaller animals.

The ecosystem The African Elephant is threatened because there are two predators the lion and the human. The lion eats the elephant, and humans use their ivory tusks for piano keys. African Elephants live in tropical and sub tropical areas. Their ecosystem is being destroyed because people want the wood in the forests.

The role it has in the ecosystem The African Elephant is herbivore. It is a prey for the lion and for the humans. The African elephant only has one predator because it is now illegal to get the ivory from the elephants. If the African Elephant wasn’t here the lion would soon die out.

How people are helping We now made it a law that people can’t use ivory from elephants and if you do it is illegal. Just make sure you don’t purchase anything that is made out of elephant.
