11 Interaction Hosts consider themselves “working middle class” and live busy lives. Hosts may leave early and come home late. Dinner is the best time for interaction Evening meals between 6-8pm Breakfast is not the best time to try to interact

12 Diet Inform the host about food dislikes or allergies Australian food is very different Come home for dinner & vital interaction Offer to help cook or cook a meal for the host.

13 Out for dinner? Let the host know as early as possible – Your host will keep a meal for you, to be reheated later or you can take it for lunch the next day Call before 4pm A phone call or SMS works best

14 Help in Homestay Everyone must help clean up – Cleaners and maids are not common and are very expensive in Australia Host will not clean your room Leave your room the same as you found it Homestay is for you, not friends Ask permission for friends to visit

15 Water Australia is a dry continent Showers should be no more than 5-10 minutes Save water any way you can Australian’s take this very seriously

16 Insects There are a lot of bugs (insects) in Australia It is normal to see insects inside the house. This is not a sign of unhygienic conditions To minimize this problem, never leave food in your bedroom
