1 Forces

2 Forces Explained

3 Forces A force is a push or pull that one body exerts on another
Formula F = Mass x Acceleration = M x A = kg x m/s/s = kg-m/s2 = Newtons Force = Newtons Fig-Newtons (way to remember)

4 Forces Balanced – Equal Forces acting in opposite direction cancel each other out, so no movement occurs

5 Forces Unbalanced forces – (acceleration)
Unequal Forces acting in opposite direction will cause object to Speed up, Slow down, or Change direction of motion

6 Forces Practice Equations What force is needed to give an object with a mass of 25.0 kg an acceleration of 15.0 m/s2 ? F = ? M = 25.0 kg A = 15.0 m/s2 F = 25.0 kg x 15.0 m/s2 F = 375 kg-m/s2 F = 375 N

7 Forces Practice Equations
What force is needed to move an object with a mass of 12.5 kg an acceleration of 10.0 m/s2 ? F = ? M = 12.5 kg A = 10.0 m/s2

8 Gravity Acceleration (due to gravity) = 10 m/s/s
Represented by letter g So anything that is falling vertically (down) on Earth has the same acceleration = 10 m/s2

9 50 kg ~ 110 pounds Weight vs. Mass
Weight = mass x gravity = mass x acceleration Weight = m x g Weight = m x 10 m/s2 50 kg ~ 110 pounds

10 Work Work is the amount of Force moved over a distance Formula
W = Force x distance W = F x d W = (m x a) x d Example =50kg x 10m/s2 x 2m =1000 Joules

11 Practice Problems A mule pulls a cart of milk 10 meters with a force of 50 Newtons How much work done on a pumpkin with a force of 16 newtons when lifted 15 meters Mark pushed his stalled car with a force of 9000 N but was unable to move it, how much work?

12 More Practice A box is pushed 40 meters by a mover, amount of work done was 2240 joules, how much force? What distance did the boulder with a force of 24 newtown travel if 240 joules of work was done on it?
