You will use your notebook ONLY for your research project. You will record all your thoughts, observations, and notes. You will keep all papers in your notebook.

__________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ HOW WILL THIS HAPPEN?! You will put the date and page number on each page! You will keep an up-to-date Table of Contents. When needed, you will use two drops of glue, a piece of tape, or a smudge of glue from a glue stick to place papers in your notebook. You will not tear out any pages.

So…an Interactive Science Notebook is….  A student thinking tool  An organizer for inquiry questions and what I learned…  A way to access and process the learning utilizing various modalities (writing, drawing, and discussion)  A place for writing research notes  A formative assessment tool for teachers TUSD Science Resource Center

Why Use Interactive Science Notebooks?  Improve organization skills  Improve critical thinking skills  Express understanding creatively

Science Notebook Setup

Science Notebook Supplies scissors colored pencils pens & pencils NO MARKERS! Spiral Notebook Or Composition Glue or glue stick

Open to the MIDDLE of your Notebook  Make a title page called “Research Notes”  The second half of the notebook is for YOU.  This is where you will take notes on your research topic  Does NOT have to be set up interactive notebook style

Right Side? Left Side? What Goes Where? Left Side = Loves Student Output Lots of Color The brain remembers things in color better.  Notes  Concept Maps  Drawings  Reflective Writing  Questions  Data and Graphs  Songs  Poems  Cartoons or cartoon strips Right Side Teacher Input/Content Blue or Black Ink/pencil  Information given in class  Lecture Notes  Video Notes  Summaries  Textbook Notes  Classroom Specific Information

“A Bit More On The Left” Getting Students to Think About Their Learning  REFLECTION: Use Guiding Prompts: What are you curious about? What would you like to test? What was the main idea? What are the important details to remember? How does this relate to your life? What don’t you understand? Even More coming up!

Getting started - Step 1: My Name My Grade On the cover, write your name and period #. Draw a diagram of something that reminds you of physical science.

Annette Holder 1 st period

Step 2:  Starting with the first page, number the first 50 pages. Numbers should be small and at the top outside corner of every page. 13 2 Cover of Notebook

Step 3: At the top of pages 5,6,7 write Table of Contents. Divide each page into 3 columns, date, description, page #. Table of Contents 576 (Skip pages 1 through 4) These will receive reference pages Date Description Page #

Step 4: 1 What are you curious about? What would you like to test? What was the main idea? What are the important details to remember? How does this relate to your life? What don’t you understand? Add the following reflection questions on page 1. You will use these as open response questions. When you can’t think of something else to do for your left side entry, use one of these. Remember open response means a paragraph and a paragraph has multiple sentences.

 The RIGHT side of the notebook contains information given to you by Mrs. Holder. This is the ESSENTIAL information that I will give you on research skills. Nothing else should go on this side.

The DAY’S ACTIVITY is placed on the LEFT side of the notebook. INCLUDES:  BOCA  DAY’S ACTIVITY  May be a graphic organizer, a song, a drawing etc. BOCA: Complete the following: consumer, producer, decomposer Plants, mice, and other mammals are.

OUTPUT Left=Loves (your interpretation) INPUT (notes from teacher) Example: consumer, producer, decomposer Plants, mice, and other mammals are.

Let’s Get Started!  Read through the Note Taking Strategies Worksheet.  Paste this worksheet on Page 3 of your notebook (The right side)  Then take your own notes/Write down the important information on Page 2 (the Left side)

We Are READY!
