1 Welcome New Students! Residential Learning & University Housing Orientation 2016

2 Benefits of Living On-Campus Students who live on campus… Develop greater sense of belonging. Participate more in student organizations. Develop more connections to faculty. Earn higher GPAs. Are more likely to complete a degree in 4 yrs.

3 Mandatory Housing Policy Rowan University requires students to live in university housing or commute from their parent/legal guardian's home within 40 miles of campus until… Junior Year (58 or more credits) 4 semesters on campus Age 21 Marriage

4 Learning Communities & Theme Housing Options Assist students to develop strong connections with faculty and peers with common interests. Communities include linked courses or other common co-curricular experiences. Students are assigned to the same residence hall, and often the same floor.

6 Housing Assignments Students are assigned based on the preferences indicated in their application. Students should complete their own application: – It is a legal contract (signed electronically) – Best match will come from answers that reflect a student’s own preferences, not always what a parent might select on the application Assignment notices will go out early Aug.

7 Roommate Requests Students may indicate a requested roommate online. Must mutually match! We accommodate roommate requests whenever possible, but cannot guarantee requests. May not match when… – Students are in conflicting communities – Students have differing preferences regarding triples

8 Triples A limited number of triples will be available this year in our traditional residence halls. Students who volunteer for triples receive over $2,550 worth of incentives. – Rate is $500 lower per semester. – $500 Fall semester meal plan credit. – $50 Boro Bucks. – Free Micro-fridge in their room. – Fee summer housing in 2017.

9 What is a Triple?

10 Single Rooms Available in all residence halls on limited basis. Priority assignments for students with disability related needs. – Contact Disability Resource Center ASAP if you have any disability related housing needs. Update preferences in your housing application to request a single room.

11 Holly Pointe Commons Our newest residence hall. Includes new dining venues, air-conditioning and other amenities. Houses Honors, Engineering, Pre-Med, History, LGBTQ+ and Writing Arts Learning Communities Designed for Gender Inclusive Housing. – Students may choose roommate without restrictions based on gender. – Bathrooms are designed to be open to all genders.

12 Continuing Housing Continuing students apply for housing in Spring semester. Students choose their own rooms and roommates. Eligible for Gender Inclusive Housing in Apartments. Sophomores remain subject to mandatory housing policy. Juniors and Seniors go through a lottery. Housing for Juniors and Seniors is NOT guaranteed.

13 Television Rowan has advanced satellite cable as well as IPTV with many channel options. Televisions must accept a digital signal using a QAM tuner. Older televisions will not work on the Rowan system. Many channels are also available on campus via the web at “tv.rowan.edu”

14 MicroFride Students living in residence halls may lease or purchase the MicroFridge. They are free for triple volunteers. The unit is 3 appliances in 1 – fridge, freezer and microwave. The MicroFridge is compact and designed to be a low energy appliance. Other refrigerators and cooking appliances are not permitted.

15 Meningitis State law requires all students who live in university housing to have the meningitis vaccination. – Waivers are permitted for religious or medical reasons Documentation must be on file with the Student Health Center prior to move-in.

16 Important Polices Prohibited Items Alcohol Illegal Drugs (including marijuana) Weapons Fire Works Flammable liquids Hazardous items Pets (except fish in 10 gallon or smaller aquarium)

17 Important Policies Rowan has zero tolerance for violence or sexual misconduct. Rowan has zero tolerance for drug violations. Arrests for misconduct involving drugs or violence typically result in immediate suspension of housing and parental notification.

18 2016-2017 Rates At time of first application Deposit -$200 (credited to Fall bill) Residence Hall Triple - $3,304 Residence Hall Double - $3,804 Residence Hall Single - $4,449 Holly Pointe Double - $4,452 Holly Pointe Single - $4,770 All Access Meal Plan - $2,170 14 Meal Plan - $2,040 Initial housing bills will be $3,804, the rate for a traditional residence hall double. Bills will be updated by Aug. 5 th.

19 Move-In 2016 Move-in will be Sunday, August 28th. Students should arrive at their assigned hall between 9 am and 4 pm. Holly Pointe move-in will be by appointment. Participation in university programs during this weekend is expected of all new students.
