1.What are organic compounds? Compounds that contain carbon.

2.What are inorganic compounds? Compounds that do not contain carbon. Carbon dioxide contains carbon but it is inorganic.

3.What are some important organic compounds that living things need? Carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids

4.Why are water and salt classified as inorganic compounds? They do not have carbon.

5.What are carbohydrates? Carbohydrates are energy rich organic molecules made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.

6.Where do most of the carbohydrates people eat come from? Most carbohydrates that people eat come from plants. Carbohydrates contain starches which are large sugar molecules. When starches are eaten the body breaks them down into smaller molecules called glucose. Cells use glucose to get energy.

7.What are some foods that contain carbohydrates? Fruits, breads, pasta, rice, potatoes, candy, and cookies contain carbohydrates.

8.How does your body use carbohydrates? Stores short term energy – body uses first Makes up cell membranes

9.What carbohydrate is found in the cell walls of plants? Can humans digest this type of carbohydrate? Cellulose is found in cell walls of plants. Humans cannot digest it. Can’t get energy from it.

10. What are lipids? Organic compounds that store lots of energy. They are made from the elements carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.

11.How does your body use lipids? Long term energy storage – body uses last Make up most of the cell membranes.

12.What are three types of lipids? Fats, oils, and waxes

13.What are some foods that contain lipids? Whole milk, ice cream, and fried foods

14.What are proteins? Large organic molecules made mostly of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen.

15.What kinds of foods are high in protein? Meat, dairy products, fish, nuts, and beans

16.Why are proteins important to cells? Make up many cell structures Responsible for many cell functions

17.What are enzymes? What do they do in the body? Enzymes are a type of protein that are responsible for speeding up chemical reactions.

18.What speeds up digestion of starch in your saliva? Amylase is an enzyme found in saliva that speeds up digestion of starch.

19.What are nucleic acids? Organic molecules made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

20. What nucleic acids contain? Nucleic acids contain the instructions that cells need to carry out all the functions of life.

21. What foods are high in nucleic acids? Red meat, shellfish, mushrooms, and peas

22.What is DNA and why is it important? Genetic material Carries information about an organism. Directs cell functions. Found in the nucleus of the cell.

23.What are four important roles of water in cells? Most chemical reactions in cells depend on substances that must be dissolved in water. Helps cells keep their shape. Helps keep the temperature of cell from changing rapidly. Carries substances into and out of cells.

24. What percent of your body is made of water? 65% of your body is made of water.

25. What elements make up water? Hydrogen and oxygen
