5 Guardian App What is Guardian? Guardian is a campus safety app, dedicated to providing personal safety to campus members. It relays critical information such as location and medical conditions to UTPD, enhancing response times. Profiles are only shared when a person allows a Safety Timer to expire or uses the emergency call feature.

7 How to get it! Connect to University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tennessee Mobile for your mobile device. Launch the “Guardian” App

8 Open the Tennessee App and Go to page 2 of the App 1. Open Emergency 2. Go to Specific Emergency Information Emergency Quick Reference

9 Fire If you activate a fire alarm or a fire is discovered: Evacuate immediately. Using the posted evacuation route, evacuate to designated assembly area. Stay at the assembly area until released. DO NOT USE ELEVATORS!! Use the fire extinguisher for small fires. The person activating the alarm should call 911 when safely away from the building. Direct visitors or students to evacuate the building. Assist individuals needing help during the evacuation.

11 Notification If available, NOAA weather radio located will alert during severe weather. UT Alert will be activated if the NOAA tornado warning includes campus. Thunderstorms – Campus does not issue thunderstorm warnings. Departments must monitor outdoor activities. Tornado Warning – gather personal items and shelter. Close office doors upon exiting. Direct visitors and students to shelter. Assist individuals needing help moving to shelter. Remain in shelter until released. Shelter is normally bottom floor interior space. Severe Weather

13 Medical Response Immediately contact the UTPD at 974-3111 or call 911. Send an available person outdoors to “flag down” EMS. Provide first aid or CPR if a trained person is available Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is located __________. First Aid is located:_________

14 Run – If outside near the threat If indoors and have a clear exit away from the shooter Hide – Lock and barricade doors Turn off lights Turn off radios and computer monitors Silence your cell phone Fight – As a last resort Work as a group if possible Improvise weapons Commit to your actions Act with physical aggression Follow police instructions Make sure empty hands are in plain view Active Shooter The decision between Run, Hide or Fight is based on your immediate situation. The appropriate response to the UT Alert issued to campus for most people is to barricade (hide) unless they have first hand knowledge of the shooter’s location. 15 Notification  UT Alert  Local media Response  Close all windows and doors.  Turn off HVAC systems.  Shelter Area: ______________________.  Seal the room (doors, windows, and vents) with towels, plastic, or tape for further protection.  Remain sheltered until released or evacuated. 17 Notification  Notify building occupants.  Call 9-1-1. Response  If safe to do so, contain the spill.  Secure the area.  The person having knowledge of the spill and its properties, should advise responders.  Evacuate to designated assembly area.  Remain at the assembly area until directed otherwise. 18 Earthquake Earthquakes occur without warning. Take immediate individual action. Get under a desk or heavy table. If a desk is not available, move into a hallway or stand against an inside wall. If outdoors, stay outdoors. Once the shaking stops Gather valuables and exit the building. Evacuate to designated assembly area. DO NOT USE ELEVATORS!! Use caution if you encounter downed. power line or other hazards. DO NOT RE-ENTER THE BUILDING!!

19 Types of outages Electric Water Telephone Steam or Gas Electric or chilled water Potential hazards caused by outages Non-functioning safety devices like fume hoods. Dangers from tripping and injuries due to lights being out. Person(s) being trapped on elevators. Dangers of extreme heat and cold on employees. Inability to contact responders if an emergency occurs while telephones are out. Sanitation problems due to no water. Utility Outage

20 Bomb Threat You may become aware of a bomb threat by: Telephone Email Maintain an open phone line with caller if possible, If directed, follow police orders to evacuate to designated assembly area. Suspicious Package If you receive a suspicious package or letter: A suspicious package may include: misspellings, wires, odor, wrong title, or oily. Don’t open, smell, or taste. Treat as suspected. Bomb Threat/Suspicious Package Immediately call UTPD at 947-3111 or 911 for either situation!

21 Other Considerations Medical emergencies.  Call 9-1-1.  Do not attempt to move the injured person.  Direct any available person outside to flag down and direct responders.  If an employee, report the injury to department leadership If evacuating, direct visitors and students safely out of the building. Provide assistance to people with functional needs. Accountability.  After all major campus-wide emergencies, self-report for tracking @ Reconnect.utk.edu or Emergency Safe Line @ 656-7233.Reconnect.utk.edu  Remain at the building assembly area until released.
