Accelerated Reader (AR) Luella Elementary

What is Accelerated Reader? A computer program that helps teachers monitor children’s independent reading practice. It is not reading instruction. The student picks a book at his or her independent reading level and reads it at his or her own pace. The program allows children to choose their own books to read, rather than having one assigned to them.

Why should we use the AR program? We use AR because it helps us: Make essential independent reading practice more effective for every student Personalize reading practice to each student’s current independent reading level Assess students’ reading with Reading Practice Quizzes (instant feed back) Build a lifelong love of reading and learning Incentivize reading Source: http://www.renlearn.com/ar/overview/

What is the first step for starting with AR? Use F&P to give each student a reading range. Set a range in AR. Make sure each student knows what color books to check out in the media center. Make sure the student’s reading range isn’t too narrow.

Where can we get the books? Luella’s media center Students will be required to choose at least one AR book each time they visit the media center. If students are not meeting their AR goals you may want them to have 2 AR books. Students meeting AR goals should have more leniency. The Fortson or Locust Grove Public Library Be sure to use Arbookfind.com Classroom Libraries Old basal readers/withdrawn books from the media center/personal books Scholastic Book Orders/Book Fairs Tumble Books

The Second Step: Important Parts of the AR Reading Practice TOPS Report: Student’s score The book’s reading level Number of points earned for the book Total points earned for the grading period Averages for the grading period: Book Level Percent Correct

Information about this quiz Averages and Totals for the Quarter

Monitoring Students’ Progress Keep an AR log Conference with students regularly (include: reading average, fiction/nonfiction/consistency) Move students’ reading levels as necessary (6 or 7 100’s in a row, several failed tests in a row) Set your grade level’s reading goal Set reading range

AR Goals: http://schoolwires.henry.k12.ga.u s/Page/10326 http://schoolwires.henry.k12.ga.u s/Page/10326

Best Practices Setting individual point requirements based on ability Reading nightly Every student should receive reading instruction every day. Encourage/require students to read nonfiction and chapter books Post class average
