Easter

What is Easter and What do christians celebrate on Easter ?  Easter is one of the most important Christian holidays. There are two reasons to celebrate. One is that Easter commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the other that Easter marks the end of winter and nature waking up after the winter period.  It is a moveable holiday (it falls between March 22 and April 25).

Palm Sunday  The Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday. On this day people bring palms to churches. It reminds us of the day when Christ rode into Jerusalem on a donkey and people greeted him with palm leaves.

Holy Saturday  On Holy Saturday, people usually go to churches to bless food they will eat the next day. Food should be put into the special decorated baskets.  Blessed food is served as part of the traditional Easter breakfast the next day.

Easter Sunday  On Easter Sunday we celebrate Christ’s Resurrection. It is celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon.  Lots of people go to churches early in the morning to take part in a Resurrection Mass and after that they eat a very festive Easter Breakfast with their families.  People exchange the real eggs. Kids are hunting Easter baskets with chocolate eggs and small gifts.

Easter Rabbit  The Easter Rabbit, also called the Easter Bunny, is the animal that hides Easter eggs. An old legend says that when children looked for Easter eggs they saw a rabbit and thought that it left eggs in their garden.

Easter Monday  In Poland this a day off. Easter Monday is connected with the old Polish custom "Śmigus Dyngus". That is why Easter Monday is also called "Wet Monday" because people pour water on each other (especially on girls ) which supposed to bring them health, beauty and fortune. It is the last day of the celebration of Easter in Poland.

Juvenalia  Juvenalia is a students’ holiday. It originated - at least in Poland – from the 15th century. Juvenalia customs can differ from one town to another. Traditionally the President of the town hands a key to the city gates to students. This is the time when young people rule the town in a symbolic way. A lot of concerts take place at that time. The fun lasts for a few days.

Prima Aprillis : The Fool’s Day  The first of April is a day of playing jokes and having good fun when we play a lot of innocent practical pranks on each other

If not, the prophesy says you will be poor for the whole next year.

May holidays Many families celebrate May days (1 st -3 rd ) with outdoor activities, such as picnics (it’s called “Majówka”). It is the best time to celebrate both the spring time and workers’ rights.

Midsummer’s Eve Last night of spring and merrymaking also known as St. John’s Night or “Noc Świętojańska” is still observed in some parts of Poland. Young maidens dressed in white, with wreaths of yellow and white wild flowers upon their heads would set afloat candled wreaths on the rivers. The rite is known as “Rzucanie Wianków” (throwing of wreaths). In Slavic tradition the” wianek” is a symbol of unmarried state—maidenhood. In Poznan we have a habit to throw into the sky the Lanterns of Happiness.
