6 Discussion With a partner or a group of 3 discuss the following: Is love all you need to develop a good marriage? How would being married as a teen affect a person’s career goals? What is the financial impact of lack of career planning?

7 Assessment Choose one of the following options: –Design a questionnaire for a potential marriage partner to complete. Survey should gather information about each of the traits to consider when choosing a marriage partner. (use pg A97) –Make a concept wheel, placing teen marriage in the center and label the spokes with associated problems. (use pg A98)

9 Commitments Parents Make Commitment to a child- How is that different then commitment to a partner? When you become a parent, you are accepting responsibility for a child’s well- being. What are the needs of a baby?

10 Problems of Teen Parenthood Health risks during pregnancy –Teens have a higher risk of premature delivery. –Higher risk of anemia and high blood pressure –Poor Pre-natal care

11 Problems of Teen Parenthood Risks to babies of teen mothers –Babies born to teen mothers are 50% more likely to have low birth weight. –Serious medical conditions can result from this

12 Problems of Teen Parenthood School and Job Risks for teen Parents –More than 50% of teens who are pregnant drop out of school –Less than 1/3 of teens who start families before age 18 DO NOT finish high school. –75% of unmarried mothers go on welfare within 5 yrs after their first child is born. Teens are not emotionally ready to be parents.

13 Assessment Choose one: –Write at least five diary entries of a teen parent. Address the difficult challenges that teen parents face. or –Write a story from the perspective of a teen parent. Address the level of commitment that parent now faces vs. before the baby was born.
