7. Types of Abuse Neglect –Neglect is the persistent failure to meet a child’s basic physical and/or psychological needs Physical Abuse –Physical abuse may involve hitting, shaking, throwing, poisoning, burning or scalding, drowning, suffocating, or otherwise causing physical harm to a child. Sexual Abuse –Sexual abuse involves forcing or enticing a child or young person to take part in sexual activities Emotional Abuse –emotional maltreatment of a child, may involve conveying to children that they are worthless or unloved, inadequate

8. Signs & Symptoms In your groups arrange the signs/symptoms under the appropriate headings.

9. Taking Appropriate Action -Refer to flow charts In Simple terms -listen /observe -record it -report it -ensure child’s immediate safety

10. If a child discloses to you Tell them they have done right thing telling you Re assure them Tell them you can’t keep it a secret Listen Don’t ask too many questions Make a record of it Ensure child’s immediate safety Report it to line manager asap
