13 Debt In addition to high taxes and inflation, debt was another economic problem that led to change in France.

19 Estates General First meeting in 171 years. Louis needed more money.

21 Constitution After renaming themselves the National Assembly (first act of the Revolution), and being locked out of their meeting place, the 3 rd Estate (along with a few other members of the other 2 estates) made an oath to stay together until they had written a new constitution. This oath was called the Tennis Court Oath.

23 Prison The Bastille In July 1789, gunpowder was also being stored there. Upon hearing rumors that the King was sending troops to break up the National Assembly, people panicked. Some stormed the Bastille to gather weapons. Bastille Day (France) July 14 = Independence Day (U.S.A.) July 4

25 Versailles Demanding lower bread prices, French women marched from Paris to Versailles demanding the King come to Paris to address this problem. While in Paris, he will live in the Tuileries. He will never go back to Versailles.

27 Old Regime a.k.a. Ancien Regime France’s social structure that consisted of the 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd Estates THE OLD REGIME IS DEAD!

31 Peasants Many peasants were NOT happy when the National Assembly took over church lands and paid clergy like govt. officials.

33 Escape The royal family is captured when they try to escape.

35 Center When trying to solve the problems of France, the Legislative Assembly split into factions (L,R,C).

37 Sans-Culottes Members of the working class who wanted radical changes.

39 Tuileries Palace where the royal family will live after they leave Versailles. This palace will later be stormed by a mob, and the King and Queen will be executed soon after.

41 Guillotine The National Convention finds Louis XVI guilty of treason. He is beheaded by a guillotine.

43 War Most of Europe’s leaders are afraid of what is happening in France. Many of these countries go to war with France.

45 Jacobins Marat is a Jacobin leader. The Jacobins are an extremely radical group. Eventually, Marat will be killed in his bathtub by Charlotte Corday. Robespierre was also a Jacobin.

47 Reign of Terror A period of time when Robespierre ruled. EXTREMELY RADICAL. During this time (approx. 1 year), 17,000 were officially executed.

49 Marie Antoinette The queen is also sent to the guillotine.

51 Third Estate More people from the 3 rd Estate were killed by the guillotine than the other 2 estates.

53 Robespierre Just like the other Jacobin leader, Danton, Robespierre was also sent to the guillotine.

55 Moderate Unlike many of the other groups that fought for power during the French Revolution, the Directory (5 men) were moderates. The Directory would rule in conjunction with a 2 house legislature.

57 coup Three years after Napoleon is appointed by the Directory to lead an army, he will lead a coup d’etat against the Directory.
